Epstein gives a complete history of snobbery in America. But did we really need this much information? Epstein divides the book into two parts, history of snobbery and most common snob objects,ie, colleges, clubs, children's acheivements, etc. This is a good book for self-evaluating your tendancies of snobbery as he hits so many different subjects. Viewed from this self-analysis theme, this book is worth the read. But generally, the book drones on as the author attempts to fill the standard page quota of about 250 pages.Although I may not have needed it, I did learn a good history of snobbery particularly as it relates to the continent. I also learned Epstein's well-stated theory that the WASP culture of snobbery was substantially reduced in the 60s with the growing counter-culture. In the second section he overlayed American snob tendancies particularly in clothing, clubs and education. In many respects, I agree with him completely. This would be a difficult subject to tackle and Epstein at least admits some of his snob tendancies very early. I think this book demonstrates that everyone has some snob tendancies. But the book could be more concise and eventually the reader may tire of the information learned but stretched to fill space.

We read this for book club in 2004. Our group loved it and the subject matter provoked lively conversation. I must have it somewhere in my home, I would love to find it and read it again. Excellent, all the stars.

I always enjoy reading the observations of Joseph Epstein, a thoughtful writer.

This work tells it all from early American history to modern times. Has good intellectual heft but still is so easily relatable in terms of our own petty idiosyncrasies An excellent sociological study interesting entertaining and thought-provoking

I loved this book! Criticized for being entertaining...as if this were a bad thing and mutually exclusive with being informative...I enjoyed chuckling along with Epstein, who openly shares his snobbery, while also deepening my understanding of snobbery in my life and in America.Epstein has it right when he says that snobbery is a result of a fear that we are not enough. And, of course, the culture we live in goes to any lengths to reinforce those fears. The ongoing anxiety of "trying to get it right" would be hilarious if it were not for the outcomes of this way of living: cruelty to others, debt, domestic violence, mistrust of each other, depression, and spiritual disconnection .....to name a few.For more information on this topic, there is a wonderful PBS documentary from a few years ago, PEOPLE LIKE US, which still has a web site with fun, informative quizzes etc. for kids & adults.

This book isn't short enough, and I appreciate how Professor Epstein name drops without names: infra-name drops. I am longing to read his short stories next

Epstein has given us a wonderful look at how snobbery has evolved through the years in America. The book breaks down into chapters based on subject grouping (A classic example is the chapter on college snobbery, where the author discusses which universities are the "hot" ones to have attended) and covers everyhting from the old-money new money class distinction, to the decline of the modern WASP.Basically, Epstein takes a slightly satirical look at how the American Snob has evolved. Written from a qausi-insider perspectvie (Epstein playfully admits to fitting a number of his snob categories) the book gives us a look at how snobbism has affected our cultural history as Americans, and assures us that the snob is alive and well today in america.Over all this is a fine intellectual read. Epstein's dry senes of humor keeps the book from being dry, and his "insiders perspective" makes the satire work even better.

Definitely thought provoking about the experiences we have had in life. If you like to think about how the people around you behave, this is a great read. It also gives you an honest look at how you interact with others.

The Boxcar Children series is purchased for my almost 6 Year old granddaughter. She had the first set of four books read to her by her father, the second set of four she'll receive on her birthday in a week; I expect she'll be reading them for herself, or to her younger sister.I read these books to her mothers at around the same age, and they have become a much loved family tradition

Great gift for a 7 year old. The books are very cute and read easily. Books are a great gift to give and these were perfect.

Our third grader reads at a sixth grade level and we found these books are interesting to him but also have wholesome values that don’t present content that is above his maturity level. We listen to them on tape for road trips and even our younger kids enjoy them.

My niece got the first box set and flew through them I read these stories as a child it never gets old. The adventures you go on in your mind are amazing. The books are all exciting to read

10 years old boy love's them. Great stories!

It's my son favorite collection. We have from series 1-12

Bought these for my granddaughter .... she loves them

Great stories to read with your child. Good wholesome books. Would be nice if they were less expensive but the books are great.

The book opens with how the Norse believed in multiple gods because they had not yet found "the one loving God, who is the Father of all, who made them and the world, and rules it by his wise laws." So they attributed the movements of the world to various gods.If you bought this book to discredit the ancient Nordics, then this is the book for you. If you bought this book to learn about their beliefs unbiasedly, go elsewhere. The agenda of this book is literally written in the first paragraph: Nordic people were stupid because they didn't believe in the Christian god.I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone; even as a joke.

To be honest, I picked this book (Kindle edition) because it was free. Reading some of the negative reviews and seeing some of the low ratings I believe is a bit unfair. While I can't say it is a must read great book, it tells the stories in an easy to read manner. There are several other works available of Norse mythology, most notably Prose Edda if you want a more academic reading. What this version does very well is tell the stories. For those of us who are not already familiar with these stories I feel the author(s) do a credible job of retelling them. They kept my interest and brought the characters to life. While I've known the names for years I learned some of their personalities. If you are a fan of the recent marvel movies, Thor and Avengers, you can pick up a little better some of the small things that at least to me didn't make a lot of sense. Even with that aside they are just great stories.Don't let the negativity turn you off, this is a good book. If you want a more academic and thorough treatment maybe this isn't for you. But if you just want something to read for pleasure this book certainly fits the bill. One of the better free offerings for the Kindle.

It would be great if this were an honest representation of the Norse myth but within the first paragraph the author specifies that this was before people knew about the one true god who created everything. You may be Christian but these tales shouldn't be altered to say that these people were wrong from the beginning. This was a peoples religion and many people in scandinavian countries still follow this in one way or another. The other thing I have to say about this book which rubbed me the wrong way is that it is extremely simplified. The author states in the introduction/preface that they wrote this for children and that most tales of norse myth are over-layden with detail. I understand the authors intention but do believe that the lose of some details do hinder the stories.Over-all I would not recommend this to anyone in search of true Norse Myths.

A wonderful introduction into Norse mythology. I'm a bit shocked at the outrage of some reviews who seem unable to understand the first few paragraphs of this book- written in 1901 obviously to a Christian audience otherwise unaware of their own mythological heritage. The stories are presented for the enjoyment of both students and teachers alike. If there is an agenda to this book, it is to present the stories in such a way that will resonate interest among those who lack prior exposure. To attribute a Christian agenda that is somehow biased and insulting is absurd at best and Christiophobic at the very least lacking historical context when this book was written and other basic critical thinking skills. It's a free download and a quick read, so have at it. If you're looking for more substantive readings on the topic, this might not be for you. If you're looking for basic exposure or bed time stories for the kids, this is a good option.

When the first paragraph says that the Gods in these stories don't exist, you know the book is going to have problems. I downloaded this to read to my daughter at night to teach her about our Gods. As a Heathen and believer in the old Gods, I find it degrading to discount the entire basis for many religions (Asatrú, Odinism, Lokism, etc.)I overlooked the beginning and read a bit farther just to give this book a fair shake. Not only do the authors say that Ragnarok has already occurred, but they mislabeled the Aesir. For instance, Sol (Sunna) is referred to as male when she is female. Furthermore, this so dumbed down and child-like it is nowhere near correct. Saying Freyja stayed with dwarves or Loki ran over hills is fine for children, but is takes away from some of the other mythology (the birth of Slepnir, how Freyja obtained Brisigamin, etc.)If you want a dumbed down clean version of the myths for kids, I guess this okay, but otherwise this book is degrading and just plain wrong.

Purchased for my 15 yo who absolutely loved norse mythology and the Thor and asgard series. She is anticipating the infinity war movie. She really enjoyed the tales in this book as it defines Little more about asgard

Before I begin, let me make myself clear: this is a review of this book, not of the stories. I like these Norse myths. They are worthy to be counted among classical mythology. This book, though, is just now what I expected. I was expecting the real thing. Instead, I got a retelling of the stories with a rather irritating, juvenile style. Don't get this! Buy The Prose Edda, The Saga of the Völsungs, or even Tolkien's retelling, The Legend of Sigurd and Gúdrun. This book is a disappointment.

Definitely get this book. im also glad it's free.I love thor and loki and Odin and Baldur and Heimdall etc.All these story's are awesome. I was never a big fan until I actually started reading thisawesome book. I love marvel thor and the real thor. correct me if I'm wrong but I thinkthe Vikings made story's of a forger with a large hammer and whenever he struck the metal with his hammer it sounded like thunder striking and his name was thor and he was the son of a king named Odin.................. I just like thinking that./L
