Another of ms gill's successes. She is a gifted researcher and writer. She has captured the essence of PTSD in this story with her characters and is a writer whose stories I will seek out again and again. She deserves a 5 rating with this tale. I intend to read her over and over.
Stayed up too late last night to finish this book, because I just couldn't put it down!! A wonderful story with great characters!! A new favorite author for me!! Awesome book!!
Growing up, my Grandma and I spent many hours talking about and reading anything we could find on the Titanic. Now, 30+ years after her death, I can say with 100% certainty she would love this book. I know I did. I struggled with putting it down. This book is based on the sinking of the Titanic, and while many books write about it, this one shows us how it affected people's lives after the event. Reg is the main character of the book, he is a first class victualizing steward. We get to know him and his friend John, both of whom have worked on many ships together. We see their friendship, and day-to-day lives as Titanic employees. as the Titanic sinks, Reg manages to survive on a collapsible. He spent quite a bit of time in the water, and suffers frostbite. As they land in New York, Reg assumes a new identity and works a great deal to keep himself busy. He has a long-term girlfriend in England, and a mom and brothers, but he cannot even consider ever getting on another boat. We see his depression and how it impacts his new normal. He basically cuts himself off from everyone and everything except work.Annie is Irish and traveling with her children to meet her husband in America, where he has made a better life for them all. She is in third class and is very timid and unsure of herself. Several Irish families befriend her and provide encouragement and support for her and her children as the boat is sinking. In the confusion, she loses on of her children and is faced with the dilemma of getting in a lifeboat with her remaining kids, or going to look for her missing child. We see her struggle with the decisions she made through much of the book as she doubts herself.Juliette is in first class, single, pregnant, and traveling with her mom. They are coming to America so Juliette can have the baby without anyone being the wiser. Her life takes an unexpected turn as they are saved, and she struggles with decisions in a romance.George is a first class passenger who is one of the few men to survive. He gets in a lifeboat early on. His marriage is failing, and he wants a divorce, but his wife refuses to give him one. The sinking of the Titanic changes things for him in a dramatic way.I don't want to give away too much, or any of the plot or surprise events that occur. However, this book is fantastic. It rings true throughout, the descriptions are vivid and I can very much believe these were all real people on the Titanic. I found it interesting that each character is suffering from PTSD, and showing it in different ways. This will be a book I read time and time again. I just loved everything about it. It's the type of book that I need to take a break and not read for a day or so, just so I can absorb what I read. I highly recommend it.
Two things made me buy this book. It was written by Gill Paul who wrote "The Secret Wife" Which I loved. And it story centered around The Titanic and passenger's stories. As always the books are factually correct and accurate. But what she does to the characters makes the book hard to put down. Twists and turns keep you guessing and in the end you feel better for having read it. Thank you Gill for writing another GREAT book
Although the novel's pre-disaster chapters were meant to establish the background for the highlighted passengers and crew, so much of Titanic's details and fate are so well-known it was hard not to gloss over the story until the hours just prior to collision. From that point forward, Paul presents a very compelling consideration of the emotional turmoil that surely existed and tormented those who survived, across all classes and for the crew. PTSD wasn't a recognized mental condition as yet, but it no doubt was something they all struggled with to some degree.
I thought this novel was well-written, although it lagged a bit toward the end and the pace picked up with a huge twist. Essentially, the book follows 4 characters: Reg, a victualling steward; Annie, an emigrant from County Mayo; Lady Juliette and her mother ; Mr. and Mrs. Grayling. All of their lives become intertwined on and off the ship. The descriptive language painted such a picture that I could imagine being on the ship or on the crowded streets of Manhattan in early 20th century America.
Well written with interesting characters from all walks of life.A tragedy that people still question. It tells how some people are heroes and others are cowards and that most of us fall somewhere in between.
I am really enjoying this author. I read The Secret Wife first and loved it. This book was depressing because of the subject obviously. But I just loved the description of the boat, the social class intricacies, and the context to what else was going on in the world. I really connected with Reg, really disappointed in a way that he was pure fiction. But relieved someone didn't really have such awful luck. Looking forward to reading No Place for a Lady.
