This is probably as easy-to-use as such an EAPG guide can be, given the vastness of the subject. The line drawings are clear and give a better sense of pattern than most photographs. I liked the way it was organized into pattern categories (Diamonds, Facets, Ribs and Columns, etc.), but found the amount of information about specific patterns varied widely. In my first attempt at using the Index, I discovered a mistake in the page number for "Jasper" (p. 156, not p. 158), but have generally been glad I added this paperback to my library.

No color pictures looks like someone just Hand drew these patterns total waste. It doesn’t tell you the value or collectible status either

I'm extremely disappointed with this book. I had gotten a later version of the same book from the library and thought that at least the pictures would be the same but they're not. They are very poorly drawn in comparison to the later version. Unfortunately the later version wasn't available on Amazon so I settled for this one. I'm afraid it was a waste of money.

There are better books for the money. Hand drawn examples do not come anywhere near close to actual pictures. The layout is logical, as in -- diamonds, circles, etc., but the actual information provided was not very helpful. This book will be one of the first to go as my library expands.

don't use any more

I had about 20 boxes of pressed and cut glass stored in our attic forever. Finally, I decided to sell it off to make space for other things. But I needed to identify all of those patterns. This book was recommended by some friends who were experts in EAPG (Early American Pattern Glass) and I ordered it.First, I must say that it is probably the most complete book of patterns available anywhere. I can't think of another book that has virtually every EAPG pattern ever made. However, it can be a challenge to get used to, because the indexing isn't as complete as it should be (the reason I didn't give it five stars). All of the possible combinations are not listed, which would make the index extremely long - but it would've made it much more useful. For instance, you could immediately find your piece by looking up "circle and fruit." But "circle and garland" or "fruit and garland" may not be there, even though the patterns are shown in the book. Also the drawings, while extremely accurate, are small so that you may pass right by a complex pattern that you're looking for. Simpler patterns, on the other hand, will pop right out.I think on the whole, though, this is THE book for anyone who has a pile of EAPG that they need to identify. After spending some time with it you'll figure out how it works, and you'll be referring to it often.

I bought the book because I am doing research on the pressed glass. The book was interesting and informative. It was a good choice although sometimes the way it is organized is a challenge.

This is a very informative book. It has everything that I am looking for.

Robert L. Utley's Sitting Bull: The Life and Times of an American Patriot, written in 1993, provides an authoritative account of the life of Sitting Bull from a historian's perspective. His primary source material was taken from the Walter S. Campbell Collection at the University of Oklahoma Library in Norman, Oklahoma along with official government records from the US and Canada. According to Utley, prior to his book, the standard biography of Stanley Vestal approached Sitting Bull from a literary rather than a historical perspective. In the book, Utley portrayed Sitting Bull as a real person as opposed to the larger-than-life "romanticized caricature" of the 1960s "red power" movement or the ultimate Sioux warrior leader and archenemy of the US Army. There was a real Sitting Bull, and Utley largely succeeds in presenting him, the good with the bad, the leader and the warrior. Utley, a historian with many significant books on the American West, is well suited to the task.Sitting Bull stands as the last key Lakota chief who resisted the reservation system and clung to the old ways until he could do so no longer. From an early age, Sitting Bull was recognized as a leader, first in battles with tradition Lakota enemies. His reputation grew based on battle exploits, and later based on his strength and persistence demonstrated in opposing the whites. Much of American history has lauded Sitting Bull based on his actions at the Battle of Little Bighorn, but Utley's book shows his significance to be much more. A major focus of the book deals with Sitting Bull's role as the last Lakota holdout opposing the reservation system. Attempting to preserve his people's freedom and culture, he took them to Canada to escape the US Army's attempts to force them to a reservation. For a short time, Sitting Bull's Hunkpapas lived well in Canada. Unfortunately, they soon faced food shortages, disputes with other tribes, internal conflict, and pressure from both the US and Canadian governments. After much stalling and as a last resort, Sitting Bull surrendered himself and his people to the reservation system.Unfortunately, Sitting Bull was unable to adapt to the reservation system and was ill-suited to do so since Indian Policy called for a drastic transformation of his culture. This transformation was too slow for the US Government and too fast for Sitting Bull and others who clung to the old ways. Additionally, while Sitting Bull remained a leader for his people throughout his life and advocated for them, he did not have the political experience or acumen of Red Cloud. In the view of James McLaughlin, Indian Agent for the Standing Rock Reservation where Sitting Bull lived, he was an impediment to progress and the conforming of the Sioux to the reservation system. Inevitably, he would meet a tragic fate during an attempted arrest involving his participation in the Ghost Dance. In retrospect, this echoes the fate of Crazy Horse and was a foreshadowing of the Wounded Knee Massacre which was soon to follow. To his last day, Sitting Bull remained a leader to his people in seeking to preserve their culture.

A very interesting story that shows he was he was a peace lover- his own man, with unmatched skills-not the chief that is a supreme fighter/warrior he is usually made out to be.

It is great to hear the Indian side of story.

not a bad book

Great book. Written with heavy use of primary sources, it stands up to academic scrutiny. Recommended for leisure or scholarly pursuits.

Utley presents Sitting Bull as a remarkable person and as a leading member of his society at a critical time in that society's history. This kind of insight is important to everyone if the concept of "diversity" in our world is to be more than a slogan. It is well written scholarship but also a captivating read.

Such a remarkable person who truly lived his heritage. This is a wonderful book, very well documented and told by a great historian- Robert Utley.

Great book about a very important man amoung Native Americans

Ex-cop Joe King Oliver was framed. After a brutal time in prison, he is now a private eye, taking on the case of a young man who was also framed. As Joe feels honor-bound to find the truth, he begins to see a connection to the same people who framed him. In a structure reminiscent of Rose Gold, he is referred from person to person in order to find the dirty cops. Along the way, he finds out a lot about himself from people whom he once arrested but respected his honesty. I found it hard to separate some of the characters, but this is a solid entry in noir fiction. As usual the novel is populated with colorful characters, particularly Melquarth Forth, a psychopath who owes Joe his life. One suspects this stand-alone might be the birth of a new series, along with Easy Rawlins, Leonid McGill, and Fearless Jones. While not on a par with Debbie Doesn’t Do It Anymore, a sequel could be.

This gritty story (translate: a little graphic) hooked me from the beginning. I'll read more of Mosley's works based on Down the River Unto the Sea.The characters are solid, with one exception that I'll mention later. The relationship between the protagonist and his daughter is EXCELLENT and relatable. The variety of quite a few characters—no mean feat to master so many and keep straight for the reader—is well chosen, and each depicted so clearly, that I never mixed them up. The writing is lean, so never did I bog down in the story. The one character that didn't ring true is Gladstone, and this is a ver minor criticism. I just never could figure out exactly what compelled him to "protect" his friend in the context of police corruption. (I'm trying not to give too much away here.) The author doesn't share with the reader any underlying commitment between the men, and I'm at the point in life where I seldom assume anyone does anything out of only the goodness of his or her heart, or brotherly comaraderie, in the vast majority of cases.Down the River Unto the Sea is a very fulfilling, fairly quick read. Highly recommended for readers of crime and police thriller.

Mosley is that good friend you can count on to come pick you up and take your out to a cool dive bar near by that you didn't know about. This bar wasn't quite as good as most to which he's taken me. I always burn through his books and I'm happy to ride along on the trip he's planned. Perhaps I have read too many of them or I read too fast because there were a lot of characters and names. At the same time, they were "counters" (like bears in a John Irving book) that I'd met many times before. The spunky, street smart daughter. The Ex who never got over the protagonist. A supernaturally capable sociopath who managed to curb his urges in honor of his friendship. The white version of that friend who was not to be completely trusted. It was like I was a bit buzzed and walking around in my own neighborhood. I wasn't actually lost but couldn't find my home. Walter, I'll read another, but please go somewhere new. It's fun to hang out with you but I know your old stories.

Mosley creates a new likeable character in his latest novel. Joe King Oliver was one of NYPD's best investigators. He is framed for a crime and sent to prison. Upon his release, he becomes a private investigator. Haunted by his imprisonment and clueless as to who framed, he takes life day by day. The one sure thing in Joe's life is his love for his daughter, Aja-Denise, and her love for him. When Joe takes the case of a black radical journalist, he realizes that solving this case may answer some of his questions about his frame and subsequent imprisonment.

Although the character is changed, this was in the spirit of the Easy Rawlins books. I found the plot to be fun and intricate, so intricate however that several times I had to go back to check a name.

My first Mosley book. Very well written, it evokes the writings of Chandler or Hammett in modern NY and with an African American voice. The characters and writing kept me reading - but I thought the plot left little to be desired - a conspiracy so big everyone except the hero was in on it and in the end seemed to have no real purpose.

I always read Walter Mosley's books in a day or two and this was no exception, so that defines them as page-turners. This was another compelling story and I learned about the Bianchina, which I've actually seen here in L. A. I also learned about the origins of Melquarth. From the very first Mosley book I read over two decades ago, A Red Death, until now, I remain a loyal fan. Mr. Mosley and I share the same L. A. native, biracial heritage and his books speak to a part of me that no other writer can.

Nonstop reading. Had to backup a couple of times to be sure I read what I read, but in all very good. I could actually feel the time in solitary confinement and the fear of being put back in that place. I think Mel is the replacement of Moose in the Easy Rawlings novels. Evil but kind of good. Worth buying. I wonder what happened to The massage lady and Willa.

Young Alice Coachman, growing up in segregated Albany, Georgia, in the 1930's, just couldn't help herself. She wanted to soar and touch the sky."Bare feet shouldn't fly./Long legs shouldn't spin./Braids shouldn't flap in the wind./'Sit on the porch and be a lady,' Papa scolded Alice," this book about the future Olympic athlete begins. When she watched boys doing the high jump at a track meet, "Alice's feet tingled, wanting to try."We see Alice's dreams growing bigger as she gets older, until finally the high school coach needed a jumper for a track and field tournament in Alabama. Her family was too poor to afford proper clothes for the competition, so her teachers pitched in and bought her shoes, shorts, and bright white socks. For the first time, she competed with the best black athletes in the South. In 1939, she won her first national medal, and soon she was asked to enroll at Tuskegee, where she'd be able to train with the best. Alice worked hard to pay her school fees.Alice dreamed of the Olympics, but with the world consumed by war there were no games to enter. Could she still compete in 1948? Would she achieve her dream of a gold medal in the high jump--and finally touch the sky?Written in a simple yet poetic style, this book captures the spirit of a true American heroine and a pioneer in sports, one who is not widely known today. It's a real "girl power" story, as well as a tale about overcoming prejudice. The stunning large format oil paintings, by illustrator Eric Velasquez, with their vibrant colors and sweeping compositions, capture the intensity of Alice's story, and especially of her jumping. An author's note shows photographs of the real Alice and her teammates and tells about what happened to Alice after her triumph at the Olympics. A bibliography is also included.

Already at a young age, Alice Coachman liked nothing better than to race down the dirt road in her home town and soar high above the ground when playing basketball during school recess. It did not take long before her skills gained notice, and Alice was invited to enroll at Tuskegee Institute and join their track and field team. Not only did Alice dominate in the high jump at U.S. competitions, she wound up winning first place at the 1948 Olympics and becoming the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal.Intertwined with this informative biography are several economics lessons, including the difficulties experienced by vulnerable households during the Great Depression, and the barriers faced by African Americans in businesses and communities across the country before the Civil Rights movement. The lyrical prose and striking images make Alice Coachman's story more accessible for young children who otherwise may miss the opportunity to learn about this influential athlete.

I'm an illustration fanatic, and this book is a delight for the eyes. Too bad that Alice Coachman's inspirational story is told in free verse. Notice for authors and publishers: It's time for paragraphs. We want our kids to read and write paragraphs.
