About the Author

Forrest "Bud" Sagendorf (1915 – 1994) wrote and drew more Popeye comic strips and books than any other cartoonist—and wrote and drew them better than all the other swabs! When Bud was just 17, his sister, who worked in an art supply store in Santa Monica, California, introduced him to a customer, E.C. Segar, the creator of Popeye. Bud began a long relationship with Segar who became his teacher, employer, and father figure. After Segar’s passing, Bud produced comic books for 24 years, penned the daily strip, and drew art for licensing products.

I love Popeye. I'm generally a bigger fan of Segar, I also appreciate Sagendorf's clean work. My only complaint is that I wish the book was in black and white. Sagendorf's beautiful lines are totally obscured by the old, crappy newspaper coloring.

Craig Yoe has plenty of what it takes to get Popeye the Sailor back where he belongs as a linchpin of the popular culture. Not that Popeye ever had gone away, but the character's truer image has faded in the glare of inferior representations of times more recent. This series recaptures (intact, without softening or Political Correctifying) the POPEYE comics of the postwar years, as interpreted by Bud Sagendorf. Sagendorf, former assistant to originator E.C. Segar proves to have a real handle on Popeye in terms of mixed humor and belligerence, absurdity and plain common sense, and bizarre stream-of-consciousness narrative momentum. These books as beautifully packaged as the SEGAR POPEYE series, the colors are faithful to the comic-book originals, and the contents are as hilarious and bizarre as any kid (irrespective of age) could desire. Highest recommendations, especially for the stories featuring J.W. Wimpy and Swee'pea.

Not as good as the Segar stuff, but I liked it.

Awesome book. Cool extras. A book that no Popeye fan should be without. Hopefully they continue with more volumes. Sagendorf did over 100 Popeye comic books, so would make a great collection.

I like Bud Sagendorf's work on Popeye. I have other strips by him that are actually better than this one but this is still good. The problem I have with this is that the Kindle edition didn't seem to format it correctly. Many times the panels weren't highlighted properly. They were zoomed in on imperfectly giving you only a partial view of the panel and you were not able to read it. It is for this reason I give it 3 stars. The comic itself is worth 4 stars.

Popeye Classics Volume One is a generous chronological collection of comics written and drawn by Bud Sagendorf from the late 1940''s. Like the humorous work of Carl Barks or John Stanley, Sagendorf's Popeye tales remain as fresh and as funny as when they first appeared over half a century ago.I am entranced by Sagendorf's storytelling style; the stories lope along at their own pace, take surreal twists and turns, and are not overly concerned with a dramatic resolution. The characters are genial oddballs, the drawing is classic "bigfoot" cartoon style and Segar continues the universe of his mentor E.C. Segar, a cartoon world unlike any other.Read and share this series (my nine and ten year old boys love them). Craig Yoe and crew have done an amazing job of presenting these vintage Popeye comics in a sturdy and gorgeous oversized collection with some Popeye extras thrown in.

This book collects the first four issues of the 1948 Popeye comic by the great Bud Sagendorf. These are terrific stories. Most of the main characters are here: Popeye, Olive Oyl, Swee'pea, Wimpy and Pappy. Noticeably absent is Bluto/Brutus. This is possibly due to copyright concerns at the time. However the stories are so well crafted (great plots, humor and characters that ring true) that I didn't notice his absence at first. These comics are in color which adds a dimension to the stories. They have also been restored which makes this book beautiful to look at.I recommend this book to readers of all ages.

What a gem. Every story, every page, is a winner. Brilliant cartooning and great, involved stories.
