PreS-Gr 1-Anja longs to be one of Santa's elves. Dressed in full Nordic regalia complete with red gnomic hat, she certainly looks the part. A thoughtful and helpful child, she acts the part as well. When she skis off in her quest to find Santa, a bird, horse, musk ox, polar bear, and reindeer show her the way. The full-page photographs look like they could be movie stills, so sharp and seamless are the figures that Anja and the animals cut against the winter landscape of Northern lights, glaciers, and snowy pine trees. While the scenes of Anja offering an apple to the reindeer or curled up next to the sleeping polar bear are whimsical and look unaltered, other images are obviously manipulated. Further, the story reads as if it were written around the pictures, rather than the other way around. The Christmas Wish by Lori EvertAnja's dream is to become one of Santa's elves.She prepared by doing things for others to get ready for the big day.Besides her horse she has help from a red cardinal and she knows what other signs to look for: stars, Northern lights, etcShe has help from others and they are able to tell a tale from a book she is carrying.She is given something special by Santa and she wonders if she has dreamed all of this..What I like about this book besides the story are the pictures, brilliant colors and so many creatures to point out in their native land.I received this book from Edelweiss and Random House in exchange for my honest review.
An adorable little girl, gorgeous winter landscapes, and instantly familiar animals, all gloriously put together by a superbly talented photographer.Norway has rich traditions in handcrafts, architecture, and particularly in fairy tales. If you have even a passing familiarity with Scandinavia, you'll appreciate rich but subtle references in Anja's finely handcrafted Norwegian clothing and accessories, the iconicałly Norwegian farm buildings, and various cultural and literary references in the story itself. If such wonders are unfamiliar to you, you've been missing out and this book will be the perfect introduction.This is a simple but magical book and an instant classic.
This is one of our top 5 Christmas books, maybe even top 2, and we have at least 100. It tells the story of Anja's wish to be one of Santa's Elves through the most magical pictures you've ever seen. My kids love that the main character is an actual real-life girl. It makes the magic of Christmas come even more alive and we look forward to reading this one every year!
My daughters are almost 4 and 2. We have a collection of Christmas books to read during December and this one was a standout this year. The pictures are gorgeous and the story is cute. I will be looking for other books by the author.

Beautiful! We always read a special Christmas story on Christmas Eve to all the kids - little ones and bigger ones alike enjoyed this. My mom is from Norway, and she was so excited to see this - the photos really made her happy. Beautiful book.

My son was doing a Christmas book exchange and picked this book to get since it is his own personal favorite. The story is amazing, and the pictures are gorgeous. I think what attracts kids the most is the actual photographs, but that also makes it very attractive to adults, too! Everything about this is fantastic.
This is the most wonderful book! The photographs are just beautiful and the story is sweet. I am from a Scandinavian family so this was a glimpse into a little of our heritage, so that was fun for us. From the costumes to the scenery to the animals to the rosy cheeks, this book is a treasure.
