Sue Halpern received her doctorate from Oxford University in 1985 and first began teaching at Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons. She is the author of Four Wings and a Prayer, Migrations to Solitude, and two books of fiction. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, the New York Times, Rolling Stone, Condé Nast Traveler, and The New York Review of Books, among other publications. I first came upon the writings of Ms. Halpern on the bookshelf in the Nature Conservancy in Silver City (NM) - (which now is apparently one more victim of the Great Recession). It was her book, "Four Wings and A Prayer" about the monarch butterfly, and its epic migrations. I found the subject fascinating; and Halpern's coverage of it, and her writing style excellent. Thus, what better recommendation for a book covering two overlapping topics of immense interest: solitude and privacy.Halpern has a journalist background - of the better kind - and this book is composed of 12 engaging stories. All were written almost 20 years ago, long before the much more intrusive examinations of airline passengers, and numerous other measures taken under the so-called "war on terror," which reduce our privacy. The first and last stories are different from the others, with the first involving Halpern's experience moving to a small town: more neighborliness, and less privacy, and the last involving a solo camping trip on a lake in upstate NY. The other 10 cover a wide gamut of experiences in America of the early `90's, and the author has a good sense in selecting vignettes that are fascinating in themselves: efforts to feed and house the homeless in NYC; two hermits who have lived in the Adirondacks, "off the grid," for 40 years; a prisoner on death row in Louisiana; the Trappist monastery in Gethsemani, Kentucky; the care of AIDS patients in LA; the death of a teenager, from a botched abortion in Indiana; a friend dying of AIDS, and it was not recognized; two stories about the thugs who make a very good living out of invading our privacy, and discovering secrets, all for a price, of course; and finally, 23 hours in an ICU in NYC. There was not a weak story, and it was difficult to select only one favorite, but I'd choose the reaction of the parents to their daughter's death in Indiana.One of the most jarring aspects of the book was a reminder that in the early 90's AIDS was prominently in the news, with friends and associates dying from this then incurable disease. Now, half a million Americans have HIV, and the overall death rate has only dropped by half, from around 80,000 a year in the early 90's to 40,000, yet the topic has been airbrushed out of the media.While I loved the stories in and of themselves, I can only give the book a 4-star rating because there was no effort to present any sort of unifying theme that illustrated how each episode tied to the purported topics of solitude and privacy. Sure, the reader could deduce some aspect of privacy, or the lack of same, in each story, but the book could equally have been Migrations to Death, and the aging process.An excellent read, but be prepared to DIY in determining how these stories all relate to privacy and solitude, and what meaning we might derive. Highly recommended for the next airplane flight!

This book was my hospital companion while recovering from pneumonia. The stories are real, heart gripping, and make you feel like you're watching the story from a hiding place. The Secret was my first choice and it left me speechless. For those who seek the quiet and trust of a good friend sharing a confidence this is that book. We are not alone in our suffering. The chapter on the ICU was as if I was the RN on duty. For those who think they know, are staunch in their opines, this book would be a fantastic gift and can opener to their hearts. Be ready to be moved.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Migrations to Solitude and I recommend the book for its subject matter, which is the quest for privacy in a crowded world. The book is divided into 12 "profoundly original" essays that have a common thread of a spiritual journey. I felt very much connected to the author while reading the book and I didn't want the book to end.The book was published in 1992 prior to the current invasion of privacy by the present administration. I wonder what Helperin would have written if she knew the invasiveness of Big Brother in our lives today. A quest for Solitude today might be impossible now in our society and all of the places of solitudes are perhaps gone for ever like the Dodo bird.

There were a few glimmers that she might be a talented writer, but i found it to be poorly done.

This book is comprised of thoughtful essays all dealing with the theme of solitude.Solitude is examined from varies perspectives and environments - a hospital inten-sive care unit, a homeless shelter, high-tech spy operations and a Buddhist Monas-tery. I highly recommend this book.

Laurence Heller, PhD, is the originator of the NeuroAffective Relational Model©, a unified approach to developmental, attachment, and shock trauma. He co-founded the Gestalt Institute of Denver and is a senior faculty member for the Somatic Experiencing Training Institute. Aline LaPierre, PsyD, is an adjunct faculty member in the somatic doctoral program at Santa Barbara Graduate Institute. Briefly put, this is one of the most important and profound works in the whole trauma literature. The authors' thesis holds that developmental trauma is very different than PTSD. Developmental trauma is radically far-reaching and colors the entire life of those affected by it. The athorrs outline five different adaptive survival styles used by infants to cope with trauma. The five styles are chronological in order. The first, connective survival style, is the earliest and most impactful. It takes place between birth and about a year. Where the child receives inadequate nurturing or abuse, this style becomes dominant. Other styles come in different times and have their own but less catastrophic impact. In the connection survival style the child adapts by disconnecting from his(or her) physical and emotional self. As a result, the child experiences great difficulty in relating to others and is often isolated without knowing how to address the problem.The other survival styles flow in later stages of infant development progression : attachment (difficulty knowing what we need and feeling that our needs deserve do not deserve to be met), trust (feeling that one cannot depend on anyone but themselves and feeling a need to be in control), autonomy (feeling burdened and pressured with difficulty setting limits and saying no directly), and love-sexuality (difficulty integrating heart and sexuality).The book focuses almost exclusively on the connective survival style. The two authors spend a great deal of time describing the conditions that cause this style and the difficulty that those who use it have with even recognizing it. They also spend several chapters outlining how to address the connective survival style therapeutically. In fact, those chapters are a superior description of how to operate therapeutically. Anyone in a helping profession could profit by reading them.Yours truly is one of the connective survival products. Reading the book felt like seeing myself for the first time and knowing why I was this way. The book well shows the disastrous consequences for a combination of abuse and neglect. I’m not sure what to do with all this yet but do something I will.

The title of this book should be: "Healing Developmental Trauma for People with Connection Survival Style," because-- despite discussing FIVE survival styles-- the authors ultimately focus significantly on Connection. My interest was piqued when I read about Attunement Survival Style, which I very much identified with. But the authors only delved more deeply in Connection, and finished the book speaking broadly and generically about trauma. I was very disappointed.

One of the best books I've read to help me move forward on my life path! It's a harder read then 'Waking the Tiger' by Peter Levine but a good follow up, and takes a step further by explaining in detail the differences between shock and developmental traumas, and the different ways we adapt to survive. It's written for therapists so definitely a more difficult read for the average person, but worth the effort. After reading this book I found myself letting go of blaming myself for my own personality 'flaws' (called adaptive styles) and of the feeling of not being enough. I have become more knowledgeable and accepting of the therapy process. I also found this book exceptionally helpful as a parent. I find I am now accepting the role I unwittingly played in my children's development, without blame. And I hope to better understand and relate to them as adults. Heller & LaPierre provide a few suggestions at the end of the book to therapists on how to best work with their clients. These could be beneficial to the layman looking for a therapist. There is no self-help or how-to advice, other then through better understanding and to have patience with the therapy process.

As a graduate student, this book has been fundamental in blowing the doors off of my own developmental trauma and understanding it in others. Taken in context with other therapies, theories, and how trauma has historically been approached, this book takes on even greater meaning.I can understand some reviewers' frustrations however, because while it's a concise overview, it won't answer all of your questions. (i.e. Can you have more than one survival style? Yes!) As a student, I have the luxury of dissecting the readings in class. It's very helpful.If you are a graduate student working towards licensing in therapy, social work, etc., or if you have a firm grasp of basic psychology and healing, you will find this a fairly easy and fascinating read. I wouldn't call it a "self-help" book, but it is certainly enlightening.As to the claims that it's not scientific, perhaps that is because there's not a citation in the book. While this is usually an issue for me, in this case, these theories are their own, based on their own work, and built upon accepted and known psychological foundations. If you need citations for basics like attachment theory, brain functions and the like, perhaps this is not the book for you.Other books I would recommend to help complete the picture would be Frank and La Barre's The First Year and the Rest of Your Life and Young, Klosko, and Weishaar's Schema Therapy.

The best book about trauma I have ever encounter. If you have read tons of books, have done lots of work on yourself, have tried different healing modalities and have seen a few different therapist and yet, years after still know that there is something that doesn't quite fit because certain emotions just keep coming up, then this is your book!!!!!! This book is so packed with information I feel like I graduated from a psychology class. You will find yourself and understand so much more about yourself , your past , your trauma , the " why " this and that . I can not recommend enough. I first borrowed the audiobook and then I had to buy the actual physical one. It's your life and you deserve to heal . Much love and blessings in your path to integration.

We all know something about our Bill of Rights but we forget that they were written to protect us from government. The writing style used does take some getting used to but it is still relevant now more than ever. When reading this, people often think the founders were "visionary", they were business men, shop owners, some with very little education and all had much to lose with rebellion from England. Still, this series of rights have no equal in the world even today...ask yourself why other nations don't have this set of rights as laws. Read it and you'll understand why a government would not want this bill of rights... that restricts their power.

I just became a permanent resident, so I bought the Constitution, Bill of Rights and Declaration of Independence as celebration. They are great little books and look great on a bookshelf.

Great short read 10/10 would recommend for anyone to have on hand. Nice details on the works that helped shape it, and provides some background people might not have known.

Overall, this is a really nice book due to the fact that it is both made to a very high quality and more importantly has a hard cover, instead of the paperback type that most of the other books of this nature have. As a result, I really enjoyed receiving this book mainly in part, because it is important to know how your country came to be, its history, and the documents that helped to establish our country as-a-whole especially when these documents contain our country's heart-and-soul per say. With that being said, this book is illustrated in a very detailed manner, which in-turn will allow both you and your family's future generations to enjoy the book along with its vital contents for many years to come.

great to read what the founding father's thought when building this great republic. their thoughts on what could happen if we are not diligent in keeping true to the Constitution. and now here we are with a runaway president and a do nothing to oppose congress.

I love this pocket-sized reference book on the Bill of Rights. It's something all Americans should not only read but have readily available. This is such a quality product that I highly recommend.

Bought this for my father for Xmas. He loves his county and was very intrigued by this little book. There is so much unknown knowledge in these books. We both learned things about our county/ constitution. I plan on buying him a few every year.

This book "Covenant of the Torch " by Abraham Park is an outstanding work That reveals many Bible nuggets and angles one does not normally think of.Three bad points:this man is slightly Calvinistic and mentions Calvin 3 times in this book.On page 19 he states"Jesus Christ paid the ransom for all sinners whom God had predestined according to His plan for redemption"--Of course this is not true--Jesus died for all sinners,not just for the elect.Another possible error is that I believe Phinehas was a third unmentioned Biblical character besides Joshua and Caleb Numbers 25:7,25:11,31:6,Joshua 22:13,31,32,Judges 20:28-the author does not mention this--though I may be wrong on this point.The author also does not mention the 11th and 12th plague named in Psalm 78:47-48.The 3rd error (page 196) is where the author thought Moses was given special vision by God to see all the way to Dan from the top of Mt.Pisgah(altitude 5,400 feet) because the human eye cannot see that far.Fact in my home town Chicago one can see 50 miles on a clear day from the top of Sears tower--Height 1,353 feetHowever here is a man who prays 2 hours a day and reads his Bible 3 hours a day.(page 11)and has read his Bible through 100,s of times since his calling(page306)I need this mans wisdom which is enormous,just keep his Calvinistic ideas in mind as you read because they rarely come into play in this book.Where do I start ??--1st he has a map of all 42 times the Israelites camped,later in the book (page 151) he describes each of these 42,what they did while there and any significance of it.Some color pictures are included ,and also a nice foldout of Abraham,s genealogy.Bible nuggets--wow here are some I found:1.Issac was still alive at the time of Joseph,s disappearance and may have consoled Jacob.2.Jacob after reconciling with Esau did not keep his word to God about returning to Bethel but bypassed it and went to Shechem with the entire Shechem slaughter coming up,he should have kept his vow and went to Bethel.3.Benjamin was about 24 years old when Jacob moved to Egypt.4.What if the Egyptians would have continued to treat the Jews kindly--the results5.The Jews left Egypt in Martial array,like the military would do in formation--(Harnessed--KJV word)(not as a mob as shown on tv shows like the 10 commandments)6.The speed of the wind needed to part the Red sea--240 mph7.All 42 campings of the Jews mapped out and detailed (as I said earlier)8.The pillar of fire gave coolness in the desert by day due to the cloud,Fire to warm them at night.9.The congregation were ready to stone Joshua and Caleb for bringing a good report of the promised land.10.Caleb was descended from Esau11.Did Jesus come from the tribe of Judah or Joseph? or both (page 26412.12.The fate of the tribes of Simeon and levi due to the Shechem disaster and how to lift a curse by Jacob(page 325)13.Gold/silver received by the Jews leaving Egypt amounted to 321,501,000 $$,divided by 400 yearscomes to 803,000 a year--God always pays what is owed--Amen14.How many generations passed b4 they returned to Canaan ? 4 or 8--the author explains.Plus much more I did,nt record--if you are looking for depth in wisdom concerning Spiritual matters especially concerning Old testament Patriarch--GET THIS BOOK.

I've read several of Rev. Abraham Parks books and this is my favorite book in the History of Redemption series, if I may say. In this book He takes us through the Exodus from Egypt, the wilderness journey, and the entry into the land of Canaan. He maps out all 42 camps for the first time in history and shows how God fulfilled the Covenant of the Torch that He gave to Abraham. This book is well written and easy to read. In fact, I was able to identify with the Israelites as they wandered in the wilderness, how they faced times of great joy as well as great adversity. The one thing that struck me more than anything else is how God cared for them every step of the way, even though they would often rebel against Him not understanding His Will. If we just follow and obey we will enter the land of Canaan (Heaven) like Joshua and Caleb did. Please read this book, it'll change your walk with God.

This is the first book I find with all 42 campsites of the Israelites' wilderness journey recorded and expounded in sequence. It even comes with a detailed map for us to refer to for clearer understanding. After the Exodus from Egypt, God had led His people through these 42 campsites to teach them His ways and to train them, before leading them into the Promised Land. This wilderness journey is a representation of our walk of faith as modern day Christians today, and there is much to be gleaned from the Israelites' experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone seeking to understand more about the bible.

An absolute must read for those who are yearning for the Word of God. The author Rev Abraham Park is truly an inspiration and a man of God who opens up the bible and reveal secrets like no other. A continuation of God's divine plan of redemption is revealed through this second book in the Genesis Genealogy series. Jesus Christ, the center of the history of redemption is explained through the covenant of the flaming torch (Gen 15:17-18) and the mysteries of God are revealed. I highly recommend for pastors, bible teachers and students alike to purchase not only this book but books 1 thru 5 that are published in English. Through Rev Abraham Park, God has revealed the Word of God. Jesus proclaimed in John 16:25, "an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but tell you plainly of the Father" I believe through Rev Abraham Park and the history of redemption series, God is telling us plainly of His divine plan of redemption.

The information in this book is unquestionably the most detailed account of the Israelites Exodus from Egypt. We can learn and apply so much of their struggles in our own lives. I like to review the book and see where I am spiritually. Am I in bondage or slavery to my sin as the Israelites were in Egypt? Am I murmuring and complaining when God has provided food and protection for me and my family as the Israelites were doing in the Wilderness? Or am I arrogant as Moses was when God told him to speak to the rock and instead Moses struck the rock, causing him not to be allowed to enter the Promise Land? Each of the wilderness camps was named appropriately to what was actually happening at that time. Author Robin J. It arrived the next day at about 11:00am. I couldn't put it down... once the day interruptions subsided, I finish it by 2:00am... then I couldn't sleep... I was as excited as a kid in a candy store.If you love the Thousand and One Night, and stories of ancient Arabia and their famous mathematicians, this gem will transport you back to those times.HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

I read this book as a kid, maybe a teenager, growing up in Brazil. I'm 47 now and I never forgot this book. I have fond memories of it. This is not just an amazing book to read just for fun, but it really shows you the beauty of math. I was always a bad math student, but this book made me at least be fascinated by it. None of my teachers at the time were able to show me the value and magic of mathematics. I think this book deserves to be included in elementary and middle school curriculums, not only in math but also in literature. It is a delight to read and a most valuable contribution to making math something fun, alive, deeply human, and important (not in a scary and forceful way) to everyone's life. If you have kids in school, I highly recommend this book. If you like math also, you should read it just for fun. I haven't yet read the English version, but I'm sure it is just as good. I just bought this book for my kids, one of which is in 3rd grade. The other is still a preschooler, but he'll enjoy it too one day. If your kid can't see the point of studying math, you MUST get this book and convince him/her to read it!

I purchased this little marvel years ago. since then Amazon has served me well and often -- but never better than with this outstanding book. if you have children or grandchildren of age nine up -- or if you yourself are not too old to be charmed by brilliant adventures in (seemingly!) simple arithmetic, please do give The Man Who Counted a chance.

I would say this book is for a adults or older kids already really "into" math. I was looking for a way to make math interesting (and my kid loves reading). It was hard to follow and very dense with terminology. For the right person the book is most likely deserving of the numerous 4 or 5 star ratings. Think twice before buying it for a kid who does not love and understand the subject already.

This book was extremely important to me growing up in Brazil. It was my introduction to the fascinations of Mathematics and also, believe it or not, the beauty of Islamic culture. I was glad to see that it exists in English, though disappointed that they haven't translated the footnotes or appendixes. The quality of the translation is uneven, but readable. I'm sorry, but you will have to learn Portuguese to read it in all its glory. For now, this will do.

This is a wonderful book in many ways, but I am sorry to have to report that it is NOT a translation of the complete Portuguese original. It lack both the entire "Preface" that appears in Portuguese and a number of footnotes by the pseudonymous author that deepen, enrich, and render more complex and beautiful this collection of tales. The translation mentions that Malba Tahan is a fictional author and that the true author is a Brazilian mathematician, but it does NOT identify the Brazilian mathematician who is the true author.

This is Arabian Nights with mathematics. It's a beautiful story, beautifully written. Lots of mathematics embedded in an interesting way. This story is great bedtime reading for my son, yet it's instructive (though not as instructive as the Number Devil).It's interesting to contrast this with Fractals, Googols and other Mathematical Tales by Pappas. which I bought at the same time. It's got more information in it, but not written well and therefore is not compelling.It's amazing that this book, which feels so in tune with the Islamic world, was actually written by a Brazillian mathematician!

I discovered this gem because of a tweet by Alex Bellos, the author of Here's Looking At Euclid, one of the finest books on mathematics I have ever encountered. The Man Who Counted is a worthy peer, with its series of mathematical dramas and engaging story of Beremiz's journey to Baghdad. Along the way, we see Beremiz do far more than merely count, as he settles disputes and makes brilliant observations, all by applying classical mathematical concepts. Beremiz is a wonderful man, not simply because of his math skills, but also because of his true character, and the book finishes with a very pleasing ending as Beremiz receives a just reward for his good works.
