I've now read this book 3-4 times. It's a pretty good book and Roth is a great writer, although, a couple of things set me on edge: Roth's insistent preaching about the metric system and determination that he would only use it. Sorry, I guess I'm an ugly and ignorant American, because I found it jarring and it literally ripped me out of the story into annoyance at this. When I was in school, Jimmy Carter tried to change the US to metric and we didn't like it OR accept the notion. Forcing change isn't the answer. Anyway, I was just reading this again and it hit me, smack in the face.Anyway, otherwise, Hal Roth is a good writer and really brings you into his story.

Excellent sailing travelogue, although I think the ports they visited are more crowded now.

He has been a sailor all of his life until he sold his Westsail. He enjoys reading sea stories. He was familiar with Hal Roth who wrote for Sail magazine.

The book details his circumnavigation east to west. It has lots of maps and picures to accompany the well written text. Highly recommended

Just finished the book. It's a very good account of a small sailboat and it's trip around the world. A good mix of sailing technique, people they meet and all the joys and problems of a husband and wife taking 4 years to go 30,786 miles.

I absolutely loved this book! It is probably the best running memoir I have read. As a trail runner, it's easy to get discouraged reading things about and by the elites, but Cory's experience as a back of the pack runner is super relatable. This book is hilarious and inspiring. I highly recommend picking it up.

Truly my favorite book ever. I have read Nowhere Near First countless times, and will download the audio book to listen to during long races. It makes me howl with laughter, sad at times, and always makes me want to get out and run. I made the leap from half-marathons to Ultra Marathons after reading this book, because Cory convinced me that I, too, could do it. I ran the Across The Years 48 hour race last year (and will again this year) solely because Cory made it sound so amazing. And it didn't disappoint. Cory is humble, self-deprecating, kind, insightful, and inspirational. I wish I lived closer so his awesomeness could rub off on me. Whether you run or not, Nowhere Near First is a worthy read.

Humorous and insightful account of the joy, lessons, adventures, social network, healthy advantages psychologically well as physiologically ultrarunning affords. This is not an egocentric "all about me" book but rather a universal tale about how by the commitment of effort and getting in this game, we can all reap the reward of happiness. That is, it's an earned achievement of doing something hard and extraordinaryAs an aging ultrarunner for over 33 years, I was very inspired by the themes articulated by this book. What hit home the most for me, was the point that while there may be winners (as these events are races), but almost everyone involved is pulling for each participant in their own struggle of endurance to the last finisher and everyone in between. Also, along with all the adventures afforded by ultrarunning, I have found no better group of people to be with from all walks of life with the shared interest in doing something so positively wonderful in so many ways. This book reminded me of this.

Two years ago I began running with the goal of a completing 1 mile. Fast forward to this year, I purchased Cory’s book prior to running my first ultra (50 miles). Nowhere Near First is hands down one of the most helpful pieces of reading I did while preparing. By sharing his stories he answered so many questions I had about training, race day preparation and what to expect mentally. I had read a lot of other books written by elite athletes and I had a hard time relating. That is the best part of Cory’s story is that he is constantly challenging himself, even when it’s hard. He also doesn’t sugar coat what it feels like to go through really long events and suffering. Suffering is part of the process and he embraces it. Every chapter is like its own story and it flows extremely well. If you start small, even with 1 mile, running an ultra can be possible. Cory’s book continues to inspire me to challenge myself to see what my limits are. I will continue to go back to his book as a reference as I train for my first international trail race and a 100K in 2018.

I read ultrarunning books for motivation as I go farther in my training. Generally it works well. There is some demotivation in this one. The author gives us details about race day issues to avoid, and some other practical knowledge. His bragging about how nerdy he is can get a little tedious, and his frequent remarks about how much pain he is in makes a case for avoidance of the whole thing. However, his determination is impressive and a common theme among back-of-the-packers and elites alike. I would recommend other books before this one, but I'm glad I read it.

Loved reading this book. As a runner, much like the title of this book, I'm Nowhere Near First in almost every case. I do find myself however at times taking it entirely too seriously. Sure I want to push myself to see what I'm capable of, but I want to enjoy it too. Cory's book reminded me to not lose sight of that side of things, to slow down and enjoy the smell of the orchards (near my house) when running in spring, to take a look at the amazing sunsets and sunrises I encounter when I've dragged myself out there early in the morning or after a hard day of work, and so on. Not only do I run to be physically healthy, but also to be mentally healthy and a more balanced person for myself, my kids, my job, my friends, my life. Cory helped me bring that perspective back ~ even though before reading the book I wouldn't have said I'd lost it. I had. I became a much more avid runner because of some major setbacks in life (although nothing like Cory's story), but it was so nice to be able to connect with Cory's story of using running to overcome our fears and limitations and to do things we'd never have dreamed ourselves capable of doing. I'm running my 8th marathon in a few weeks. I'd nearly stopped training for this one because it had gone so miserably this time around. I'm actually looking forward to it now ~ not because my race time will be anything special, but because I'm blessed to be able to do it at all. Thanks Cory for the reminder.

When I read any George Sheehan book I probably highlight 50 or more passages. I highlighted maybe 5 passages in this book. Still, those 5 insights were helpful to me as a runner. This isn't a George Sheehan kind of book. It is a collection of stories about running 100 mile races, or on some occasions, 100 miles "just for fun." Really incredible.The author is totally unassuming about his accomplishments as an ultra runner. He seems like a really great guy.

 397 pages of werewolf stories, films, folklore, history, and everything else. This one delves further into the human mind then the absolutely necessary Vampire Book that preceded it. There are several historical figures and serial killers within these pages that had a bit of a wolf fetish and manifested lychanthropic behavior to match. The obvious psychological and instinctive animal nature we all live with is perfectly encompassed by this particular horror metaphor. Also along for the ride are the requisite filmographies and lists of books, stories, historically relevant reports of werewolfism, and much more. From the real-life mystery of the Beast of Gevaudan to Hitler's delusions of lycanthropy there is a lot of fascinating material.Granted, a large portion of this volume is dedicated to things other than werewolves and shapeshifters such as serial killers like Jack the Ripper and accused vampiress Elizabeth Bathory; but to be fair, there just isn't that much werewolf material out there compared to vampires and the book needed padding. Think of it as bonus horror material. This is still a step down from "The Vampire Book" any way you look at it, though. But I appreciate the thought.Werewolves have always been a close second to vampires as far as my favorite horror creaures go. Interestingly, while vamps have all the sex appeal, popularity, and supernatural powers it's the werewolves who always win when the two fight in the movies. This is particularly interesting because more often than not, the lychans are servants of some kind to the vamps. I guess it's just our nature to root for the underdog (or wolf, as it were). Then there's always the fact that vampires are a metaphor for corrupt upper class nobility while werewolves -the beast within- are something we can all relate to. A working class monster.Well, if you are a fan of the man-eating shapeshifer then this book is for you. It's not as jaw-dropping as the vamp edition, but it is still a gotta-have reference for anyone who wishes to increase their horror knowledge.4 1/2 stars rounded up for lotsa pretty, pretty pictures.

This books is the companion volume to The Vampire Book: The Encyclopedia of the Undead. While not comparable in sheer size to that other volume, it contains hundreds of references to werewolves and many other beast shapeshifters, including tigers, panthers, bears. It does to Werewolves what any good reference encyclopedia should to: provide nearly exhaustive reference to werewolves as found in popular legend, mythology, pop culture, films and novels. The books has a good number of black and white illustrations including some from medieval sources. This book is not only for those with a casual interest in werewolves but also for those interested in a more academic reference book. I highly recommend this book whether you are researching a term paper or, like me, you have an intense fascination with the supernatural and with werewolves in particular. My only critique is that I wish the book was bigger, but then again, this book will probably continue to grow and expand as The Vampire Book (now in its 3rd edition) has.

"The Werewolf Book" is a comprehensive and exhaustive study on were creatures and other shape-shifting beings. The author Steiger divides each section alphabetically for easy 'look up' and indexing. At a hefty 350+ pages this book is fascinating edition to any werewolf enthusiast's library.I had two peeves: One, despite the title only about a third of this book seems to be about werewolves. The rest of it is divided between Psychological studies of serial killers and the mentally ill. The other third seems to be other shapeshifting creatures which is interesting, but could've been put in another volume.Still, this book offers quite a bit of interesting tidbits for werewolf enthusiasts, and I recommend it for those interested in the lore of the loup garou.One star has been deducted for the sections focusing on modern serial killers and sections on demonology which seem to be filler more than substance.

I wish this book would be more picture heavy. Otherwise if you are a lycanthrophile this one is the book to go. Sometimes it not only discusses werewolf but other shapeshifting beings as well, making it an interesting pastime.However, since werewolf is fictitious, no matter what you think, most of what is written in this book is derived (gasp!) from movies. So don't take it too seriously.We have our inner beasts to contend with, but let's face it, it's more metaphoric than literary.

Unfortunately, this pompous, pretentious volume does little or nothing to support that statement.Less than 20% of the entries in "The Werewolf" Book have anything to do with non-fictional lycanthropes. There are multiple articles on movies, actors, actresses, various aspects of the paranormal, mythological monsters other than weres, and an almost nauseatingly complete reciting of infamous serial murderers. However, usable data relating to the phenomenon of lycanthropy and werewolves is conspicuously scarce.There can be no doubt that Mr Steiger is very accomplished in the conducting of research and compiling of data. It would have been more useful were he accomplished in sticking to his stated subject.As a brief reference to occult/gothic/mythological terminology, "The Werewolf Book" has some value. As a study of the history of the werewolf phenomenon, it is useless.Not recommended.
