Review

Praise for For Discrimination“Kennedy is one of our most important and perceptive writers on race and the law, and the mere fact that he wrote this book is all the justification necessary for reading it. For Discrimination is a heartfelt and tautly argued defense of affirmative action, a smart, concise refresher of the liberal position that is well worth the general reader’s attention.”—Washington Post “Refreshingly honest. . . . Beginning with its provocative title, For Discrimination is a profoundly honest work on a topic frequently marked by mendacity.” —New Republic  “Kennedy offers a clear-eyed take on America’s battle over affirmative action and diversity. . . . He goes straight at the issue with fearlessness and a certain cheekiness.” —Los Angeles Times “Compelling. . . . Powerful. . . . Rare intellectual honesty and fair-mindedness . . . Kennedy deftly presents the case against affirmative action—and explains why he supports it anyway.” —Wall Street Journal“Meticulously argued. . . . An illuminating, detailed argument in favor of affirmative action and its application via race-based methods . . . Kennedy vividly portrays Supreme Court decisions as malleable, subject to reinterpretation, and even reversal not only because of the makeup of the court but because of the changing tide of political circumstances and public opinion.”  —Boston Globe “Kennedy’s For Discrimination provides supporters of affirmative action with the penetrating, concise, coolheaded arguments for racial justice they’ve been waiting for.” —Vanity Fair  “Remarkably astute and tough-minded. . . . Should be required reading for anyone interested in genuine equal opportunity in the United States.” —Florida Courier        “This is an important book. Kennedy, who admits to having benefitted from affirmative action, will force a lot of long-needed conversations with his opinions, conversations for which he includes abundant, solid fodder. This book is about as far as you can get from a casual read, and should be approached with an open mind, general legal knowledge, and a good dictionary. If you can handle that, then go ahead and make For Discrimination yours.” —Times Weekly “Provocative. . . . Important. . . . For Discrimination offers a thorough analysis of the topic and leaves the reader feeling as though he or she has just left a lawyer’s office having been briefed on the many perspectives on affirmative action within in the United States, and is now ready to testify in court.”  —PopMatters“This is arguably the most clearheaded defense of affirmative action ever written. Kennedy’s incisive analysis includes a compelling critique of a range of arguments by legal experts and social scientists on the pros and cons of affirmative action. In clear prose For Discrimination advances powerful arguments for sensibly defined affirmative action. This thoughtful book is a must-read for all Americans devoted to addressing past and current injustice.” —William Julius Wilson, Lewis P. and Linda L. Geyser University Professor, Harvard University“For Discrimination considers the definition and boundaries of affirmative action and why it is both championed and denounced in society, and is a fine pick for social issues and legal collections alike. It considers its benefits, costs, its impact on different racial groups, and provides a personal review of the policy and its many issues impacting American race relations. The result is a powerful assessment and history of affirmative action processes and perfect for classroom debate and discussion at both the high school and college levels.”  —California Bookwatch“Required reading. . . . Kennedy knows where the nerve endings are in discussing the complexities of race in America . . . Admirably balanced and provocative.” —Publishers Weekly “Fair and tough-minded. . . . Kennedy continues his strong track record of making thorny conversations about race and the law accessible to general readers, discussing complicated issues and court cases in a lucid, forceful fashion.” —Kirkus Reviews“Kennedy addresses one of America’s most contentious issues—affirmative action—on two fronts: the colorblind, race-neutral ideal and the need to address the impact of both past and contemporary racial discrimination. . . . A probing and well-considered look at the complexities of race relations and the continuing controversial issues of affirmative action in contemporary America.” —Booklist

This would be a decent primer on affirmative action for someone relatively unfamiliar with the issues, and who wanted to hear mostly the talking points of affirmative action supporters. It does acknowledge the counter-arguments, but this is often a bit cursory and -- worse -- usually dismisses them by proclamation (just announcing that the arguments are wrong or that he doesn't find them compelling). It's left-leaning, of course, but not quite as maddeningly so as I'd feared. Way too much time and text is dedicated to historic quotations extolling the virtues of affirmative action in flowery language. Overall, it's high on rhetoric and low on facts and analysis. If you're already familiar with the affirmative action debates, the book won't be very interesting -- except in the sense that Kennedy is an interesting and sort of famous guy. (I got the "Audible" version, which he narrates himself). This biggest disappointment is that I got few, if any, new insights.

Most interesting and clear presentation even though I happen to disagree with the author. On the whole slightly biased but should make some readers comfortable about positive discrimination.

This is by far the best history and analysis of affirmative action in the United States that I've read. It presents a very detailed history of the policies, as well as presenting a very fair, measured account of the different sides of the debate, and the evolution of those positions over the past 60 years. Although Kennedy makes his position very clear (he's for affirmative action, and for race-based policies as one component of it), he always backs up his affirmations with evidence and very clear arguments. This is a must read for anyone interested in affirmative action policies in higher education or other areas in the United States, and in the rest of the world.

I haven't yet had a chance to finish it - too many other commitments. But the issue is extremely well presented, and the arguments are well thought out.

The advance blurb from William Julius Wilson on the back of my hardcover reads: "This is arguably the most clearheaded defense of affirmative action ever written." I have to assume that Wilson is a personal friend of Kennedy's. This book is anything but "clear headed"; it isn't even really an "argument."Consider the critical issue of audience. To whom is this book addressed? I would expect a book arguing for affirmative action to address an audience opposed to or suspicious of it. However, the book seems largely written to address left-liberal objections to affirmative action. The chapter titled "The Affirmative Action Policy Debate," considers mostly left-leaning objections to affirmative action. I don't have any public opinion polls in front of me, but I'm willing to bet my left kidney that public opposition to affirmative action doesn't stem from it being insufficiently radical. So why not address the objections held by the general public?Kennedy's rebuttals to the left-liberal objections he does discuss don't amount to much, in my opinion. They are the kind of small, speculative points that would fit more comfortably in a blog post (or in an Amazon book review) than in a full-fledged book. Consider, for example, his rebuttal to the book MISMATCH, by Richard Sander (which I have not read). Essentially, Sander argues that affirmative action harms recipients by placing them in competitive environments where they invariably are outmatched. If they attended schools with peers who share equivalent preparation, then they wouldn't enter a kind of "self-doubt" spiral, where relatively poor performance confirms doubt, which in turn feeds further poor performance. Consequently, the number of black attorneys would rise without affirmative action, as fewer would drop out of school or fail the bar exam.Kennedy spends many pages summarizing other people's rebuttals to Sander before getting to his own (weak) counterargument, which essentially is to argue: yes the mismatch effect may reduce the number of black lawyers but "[a]n alternative goal is to advance the black community as a whole, a goal that might be seen as better served by whichever admissions regime will assure the largest number of blacks at the most elite schools" (133).In the margin of my book I scribbled "proof?" After all, affirmative action has been around for 40 years; at some point we have to move from the theoretical to the empirical. Kennedy doesn't really explain what the "benefits" would be to the community, but surely they should be measurable, otherwise saying "maybe the black community as a whole benefits" is the kind of glib, non-falsifiable argument I would expect to hear at a dinner party. An argument that can't be falsified is probably not genuine. There's also reason to doubt whether or not Kennedy seriously believes that the "black community as a whole benefits" from affirmative action because, only ten pages later, he responds to another left-liberal critique: that affirmative action recipients are overwhelmingly mixed-race or are children of immigrants from Africa or the Caribbean, who are not positioned to "provide leadership in the continuing struggle against African American subordination" (144). Kennedy seems to concede this reality but meekly offers (in my paraphrase) "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good."However, if it's true that two-thirds of affirmative action recipients have a relatively weak association with the mass of African-Americans, can we really say that they are likely "to advance the black community as a whole" because they have an elite law degree, which is Kennedy's non-falsifiable rebuttal to Sander? Maybe these facts can be reconciled and harmonized, but Kennedy doesn't attempt to and I can't on my own do it.The remainder of the book contains little to discover. One long chapter looks at various Supreme Court opinions and criticizes the "diversity" rationale for affirmative action. Yet Kennedy doesn't provide a competing rationale that is as clear. Instead, he argues that affirmative action should remedy past oppression, which is variously described as "discrimination," "segregation," or "an affront to basic human dignity." Since his example of each is drawn from black history, it isn't obvious whether or not there is a straightforward application to non-black recipients of affirmative action. I was hoping for a clearer discussion. After reading this chapter, I kind of felt as if "diversity" was a more intelligible rationale for affirmative action (and an easier principle to administer) than anything Kennedy had to offer by way of contrast. This is the third book in a row in which Kennedy has discussed affirmative action. In SELLOUT (2008), he included a long essay on Clarence Thomas's views on affirmative action (that took up about a third of the book). And in THE PERSISTENCE OF THE COLOR LINE (2011), Kennedy used affirmative action as a frame for interpreting public debates surrounding President Obama's election and the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Now there's this book. As the books pile up, the analysis isn't getting any sharper. Will there be a fourth?

I took a look at the 8 previous reviews and cannot believe my eyes at the negative views of this book expressed by several of them. I would gladly give this book 10 stars if that were possible, as I think the author has written an honest and very sophisticated analyses of a very complicated and politically sensitive subject. I ran into it while preparing to write a new concluding chapter, to a book on race in American law and politics, which tries to explain why there has been so little progress in race relations since I wrote the first edition in the early 1990s. My college teaching career extended from 1964 to 2000 (with a year off to be a Fellow in Law and Political Science at the Harvard Law School--prior to Professor Kennedy's arrival), and I taught many courses in political philosophy, law (including substantial focus on law and race), and for the last 10 years a class specifically on Race in American Law and Politics. I found Kennedy's summary of the leading court decisions and his descriptions and interpretations of the various issues, especially in higher education, to be extremely accurate and fair. While I do not completely agree with everything he says, it is all reasonable. The one thing that really puzzled me is the book's title: FOR DISCRIMINATION. Perhaps it refers to the fact that he acknowledges that affirmative action really does lead to discriminatory treatment of individuals. (He suggests that the rage for "diversity" may be an attempt to package this discrimination to make it more acceptable to the courts.) I can only agree with him on this, and also on his belief that affirmative action can be a good thing if done carefully. Or perhaps the title is an attempt to sucker bigots seeking academic legitimacy for their attitudes to read it and perhaps be convinced by some of his arguments before they realize they have been "had." (I doubt that this latter explanation of the title is correct, though.)

Well, the writer does have a sense of humor. Otherwise, there really isn't to much here. There really was nothing on Puerto Vallarta. In the end, the book degenerated into filler.

For several years I've been playing nascar on wii. And because of that I got spoiled on not having to brake or deal with the things the car will do while accelerating or braking or knowing why the car was behaving the way it was when I started to accelerate. This book was very helpful in telling why and how to help to be better in braking to help lap times.

Nice

If you are short on time, this is a brief overview. Better insight to driving techniques can be gained from any racing book, and iRacing-specific info is sparse. Info on equipment is limited to two pedal sets that the author has owned and can be easily gleaned in a few minutes from the iRacing forum.

Quick order, quick delivery...

I recommend this series of books from rookie to intermediate iRacers. A lot of useful information that has helped me on the race track.

I found this very easy to read and informative. Helpful for anyone looking to improve laptimes in any race sim (or real track)

I enjoyed the writing in this book and enjoyed hearing the story of a young tribal prince's descent into captivity and his ascent to freedom, as well as what he did with his freedom. I purchased the book for middle schoolers, but felt the writing is better geared toward 3-4 graders. The history was not "whitewashed," but the horrors of the middle passage and difficulties of life were handled subtly for sensitive children. Perhaps without further study, a student might conclude that life as a slave wasn't so bad, but with additional discussion about the realities of slave trade, it will be an excellent resource. The book mentioned once that he was beaten with a whip, and mentions a few times the scars left, but because of the story's emphasis is on his willfull path toward freedom, the book has an overall positive feel and outcome. It's focus is not the illumination of terrors, but the perseverance of the human soul to long for freedom. It's a great book to read focusing on empowerment, discipline, and hard work in the worst of situations. I would not use it to drive the point home about slave trade.I also liked that several legal documents are inset within the story, as they made for very good reading challenges.

I did not read this book yet. The review is based on my 10 year old son's experience. He said that the beginning is slow and not "so interesting," but by the middle of the book he was hooked. He really enjoyed this book so much that he wanted to tell me all of the details. My son is high-functioning autistic and has a really difficult time getting interested in any book that doesn't involve Minecraft or Legos. With that said, he read this book in 4 days!!!! That alone is a reason to make a 5 star review.

I used Amos Fortune with my seventh and eighth grade literature classes. This was my first year using this book and I was concerned that it would not capture the modern teenage imagination. I was so pleased by their reactions. They loved the book, and I loved introducing them to well-written literature. I love the character qualities presented in this book. I will be teaching this one for years to come.

Well written children’s book and really appropriate for Black History month in the northeast. His success and respect of the entire community is a wonderful legacy for those who feel this isn’t a place for an African-American; New England. Personal best knows no bounds!

A compelling story about a freed slave who made his way north. It was the first Newbery Medal winner I encountered at age 10 when my fourth grade teacher read it aloud to our class. It's still a must read for elementary school students. Gripping, and informative about slavery in America, it began my personal journey, still going on today, to learn about and help to eradicate racism.

Nice edition of one of the most wonderful true stories I've ever read. It is an easy read, but very impacting. Highly recommended!

Ordered it for my son. One of my favorite books. Thought it was a perfect way to explain history to my son.

I liked this book because it wasn't just a boring story but a story of how a free negro man was captured, sold, got freedom, lived, and died. It was an incredible, miraculous story of how a negro named Amos was set free from slavery by his master. Amos didn't just hog his freedom, but used his freedom to help others get freedom.

Tornado!: The Story Behind These Twisting, Turning, Spinning, and Spiraling Storms (National Geographic Kids)

Amazon.com Review

Through riveting narrative and eyewitness stories, young readers learn what it's really like to be caught in a monster tornado. Captivating first-person accounts and news reports detail survivors' experiences of the most destructive tornadoes ever to occur in the United States. And thrill-seekers' reports add to the drama and suspense. Historical perspectives on the human experience of tornadoes and scientific perspectives on why twisters happen and how to keep people safe add to the intrigue of this fascinating topic. Ample back matter will help students find sources to write well-informed and compelling reports. Q & A with Tornado! Author Judith Brindell Fradin Q: What inspired you to write a book about tornados? A: Dennis and I are Midwesterners. As such, every spring and summer, we experience volatile weather, fascinating and frightening at the same time. Several years ago, our house and car were damaged by a downdraft--a phenomenon, like a tornado, caused by a cold front colliding with warm, unstable air. Last year, a tornado struck less than a mile from where I was driving with my daughter and granddaughters. Watching the gigantic wall cloud approach us and feeling the wind-driven, instantaneous 25 degree temperature drop was terrifying, forcing us to seek shelter. Who knows what this spring will bring as cold fronts from the north, winds from the west, and moisture from the Gulf of Mexico collide and spin over our area? Q: Why is it so difficult to predict when a tornado might hit? A: Tornado prediction is much more reliable now than ever. The Storm Prediction Center monitors radar and satellite imagery to watch the creation of spinning storm cells, then monitor conditions that could lead to severe weather. Sirens sound, alerting citizens to take shelter. For these reasons, there are fewer serious injuries and fatalities from twisters than in the past. Q: Is there any other weather phenomenon you might want to write about in the future? Why? A: We’ve already written our WITNESS TO DISASTER series for National Geographic Children’s Books: VOLCANOES! HURRICANES! EARTHQUAKES! TSUNAMIS! and DROUGHTS! Our FLOODS book has been written, but not yet published. Q: What is the most fascinating thing about a tornado? A: In an era when humans like to think we can control the trajectory of our lives more and more, tornadoes remind us of the power of nature and encourage us, like our ancestors, to learn to read the skies. Q: There is some stunning photography in the book. Do you think people risk too much getting close to dangerous forces in the pursuit of snapping great photos? A: People who photograph dramatic and violent forces of nature fall, in my mind, into three categories. Some are scientists, prepared with state-of-the-art storm-monitoring equipment and vehicles. The scientists understand, respect, and fear the forces of nature they study. Some are storm-chasers--risk-takers who, with lesser knowledge and equipment, shoot stunning images. Finally, there are amateur photographers who find themselves in the path of an approaching storm, whip out their cameras, click the shutter and snag awesome images. We sift through thousands of photographs taken by scientists, storm-chasers and amateurs to acquire the pictures for our books.

#38,605 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

My 5 year old daughter is going through a phase of watching documentaries and learning about extreme weather. She really enjoys this book and it's pictures. It helps show her the real power of tornados and there effects on the people that live with them.

This book starts by telling the reader about a monster tornado that struck Greensburg, Kansas back in 2007. Using bulletins from the weather service and comments by those who lived through it the reader gets a glimpse of the terror and incredible damage a tornado can cause. The photographs, as one would expect from a National Geographic book, are stunning. The picture of an almost entirely black sky with a tornado touching down is shiver inducing. There is nothing quite so humbling as Mother Nature. The following chapters talk about the development of tornado science and prediction. The charts and diagrams and quick facts add nicely. The design of the book is very attractive and appealing, especially for reluctant readers. The lists of tornado records will of course need to be adjusted after this most recent outbreak, but the numbers are still impressive. For example, the widest known tornado was two miles, the highest wind speeds ever recorded on the planet were in a tornado, 318 miles per hour. Facts like these are hard to fathom for those of us who haven't witnessed them. Like most National Geographic publications, the photographs are its strength, creating awe on the part of the reader. The list of websites and books at the end of the book are a nice complement to the rest of the book. I highly recommend this book for those who want a better understanding of tornadoes and their affect on human lives.

Book arrived damaged, very bent. The sleeve wasn’t even on the book and was also crumpled, like they didn’t even try. Returning! It was suppose to be a birthday gift but the replacement will be too late.

My 5yr old son loves tornadoes. I had bought a few different tornado books but this one is probably my favorite. Great pictures and very informative about tornadoes. I would recommend this book over other tornados books for kids.

Perfect for my 5 year old who loves to learn about tornadoes.

My nephew LOVED this book!

Great book for kids into tornadoes

One of my kids favorites. Excellent pics with all Nat Geo books.

From the Publisher

Jan Wong, a Canadian of Chinese descent, went to China as a starry-eyed Maoist in 1972 at the height of the Cultural Revolution. A true believer--and one of only two Westerners permitted to enroll at Beijing University--her education included wielding a pneumatic drill at the Number One Machine Tool Factory. In the name of the Revolution, she renounced rock & roll, hauled pig manure in the paddy fields, and turned in a fellow student who sought her help in getting to the United States. She also met and married the only American draft dodger from the Vietnam War to seek asylum in China.Red China Blues is Wong's startling--and ironic--memoir of her rocky six-year romance with Maoism (which crumbled as she became aware of the harsh realities of Chinese communism); her dramatic firsthand account of the devastating Tiananmen Square uprising; and her engaging portrait of the individuals and events she covered as a correspondent in China during the tumultuous era of capitalist reform under Deng Xiaoping. In a frank, captivating, deeply personal narrative she relates the horrors that led to her disillusionment with the "worker's paradise." And through the stories of the people--an unhappy young woman who was sold into marriage, China's most famous dissident, a doctor who lengthens penises--Wong reveals long-hidden dimensions of the world's most populous nation. In setting out to show readers in the Western world what life is like in China, and why we should care, she reacquaints herself with the old friends--and enemies of her radical past, and comes to terms with the legacy of her ancestral homeland.

I find Jan Wong to be an excellent storyteller. Wherever she is, whatever is happening to or in front of her - you are right there experiencing it alongside her.Other reviewers take issue with with her evolving views on Maoism. That did not concern me. I suspect there are more than a few of us who at a certain age, didn't hold beliefs that turned out to be wrong or naive. With further information her views changed and she doesn't hide any of this to make herself look better. It turns out that, like the rest of us, she made assumptions and came to realise she was wrong about something. If you want to know what it was like for a foreigner in China during it's Cultural Revolution - read this book. If you want to read a first hand witness account of the Tiananmen Square Massacre in 1989 - read this book. If you want to read a book by someone who puts you in the middle of interesting (though often tragic) situations - read this book.

In her autobiographical “Red China Blues,” author Jane Wong does what the much more vaunted Jung Chang and her similar “Wild Swans” did not. Specifically, she injects much-needed humor and self-effacement along with the obligatory tale of hardship during China’s Cultural Revolution. To be fair, Wong also plays things almost problematically middle-of-the-road, never fully condemning Mao’s edicts nor providing readers, especially bewildered Westerners or seething Chinese the kind of good vs. evil narrative that Chang does. In fact, she gets downright wistful for Mao’s socialist extremism as she frets about the dramatic economic changes that transform China following “The Great Helmsman’s” passing.Yet, I’m giving her a pass for several reasons, mainly that her honesty is never in question. She tells things as she saw them and doesn’t spare self-condemnation. While she does blame the propaganda she eagerly devoured at the beginning for the climate of frenzied paranoia that defined the Cultural Revolution, she admits that she was a true believer in the promises Mao made. She ends up sadder but wiser even as she strives to make it clear that she doesn’t regret much from her years in China, and I respect that level of personal integrity. Whereas Jung Chang railed at Mao for turning her into a bad person, Jane Wong takes the blame for willingly being duped.Engrossing, particularly when describing the rigors of life in rural China or the Tiananmen Square nightmare, Wong uses the skills she has as a journalist (and the rigorous journals she kept during her years of indoctrination) to give the reader a genuine first-hand experience. The book tails off a bit during the post-Tiananmen chapters, wherein she chronicles the economic changes in China during the era of Deng Xiaoping, but it’s still an interesting look back at the antecedents that have led to today’s economic circumstances in China. There are a lot of books about the Mao years and their effects on individual Chinese people, yet this is one that not only provides insight, but also a sense of wry humor to what is often written of in angry, bitter, and stark terms.

I marked up this book all over with highlights and notes. This is one of the best books I've read in a long time, whether fiction or non-fiction. Yeah, it's over twenty years since publication, but I recently had some close family members move to China and this book was recommended to me so I'd be more informed and less worried. That goal was accomplished AND I learned so much reading this book. Jan Wong can truly write and I appreciate all she went through for my benefit all these years later.

An enthusiastic young activist, Jan Wong left Canada for Beijing in 1972, in hopes of simultaneously aiding Mao's cause and pursuing her ancestral roots. This well-written, enlightening account of her "journey from Mao to now" takes readers through her six years as a student and subsequent six years as a reporter in Red China's capital city.Wong was uniquely qualified to write this book, which privileges readers with deep insights into why things were the way they were then, and are now, in China. Having Chinese parents, but being raised in the West, rendered Jan part of both worlds. She experienced the Cultural Revolution and post-Mao China as both an insider and a "foreigner," resulting in a perspective on those periods that only a few can claim, and fewer still have written about. The first part of the book tells the story of the author's Beijing University days. In 1972, armed with only the vocabulary she had acquired in Mandarin 101, Wong left the comfort and security of her Montreal life to spend a summer in China. Inspired by what she observed in Red China, she found it a natural progression to move from worrying about feminist issues to supporting Maoism. So she petitioned and won permission to stay in the country to study at Beijing University for the next two years. Anti-establishmentarianism was "in," and "China was radical-chic" at the time, she explains. Western youth looked to the East for answers and antidotes to racism, "exploitation" of the masses, and materialism. Becoming a journalist seemed like the perfect job for a young woman seeking to change the world, so she decided to remain in China to learn Mandarin, Chinese history, and Maoism. Her goal was to bring knowledge of all that she thought China was doing well to the West.As a starry-eyed young Maoist, Wong did not realize how miserable people really were. Instead, when she discovered that she and the other foreign students were being given better rooms and special food privileges, they protested until they were allowed to eat the miserable starvation-level rations given to the rest of the students in their dingy canteen. Then she and her foreign friend petitioned to join their Chinese classmates in undertaking the required physical labor projects they had been exempted from. She was finally allowed to dug ditches, haul bricks, and harvest crops with everyone else. The author's first clue that Communist China might not be the paradise she had dreamed of came when the school asked her to end her friendship with a young Swedish man or be expelled. The school actually played a distressing mind game with her over this issue. From this experience she learned that in China people were not only unable to do what they wanted, but they were also not free to think what they wanted.Yet, Wong remains zealous in her attempts to prove that she is a good Maoist. In fact, Part One of the book culminates in her informing on two students who asked for her help to leave China for the US. At the time Wong thought she was doing the right thing by turning them in, but now she regrets her decision and feels great remorse for the terrible fate that probably befell these people after that.In Part Two, Wong returns to Montreal to complete her McGill University degree. Still supportive of Red China, she lectures locally in an effort to muster public support for the country and its political agenda. After graduating in 1974, Wong won a Canadian government scholarship to study at Beijing University, and off she went for more of the same. In addition to learning more about her school experiences and deepening understanding of what was happening on a personal and political level, the author meets and marries Norman Shulman---an American. After her studies end, she takes a job as a foreign correspondent for the New York Times. She finds that her Chinese appearance and fluency with the language give her a unique ability to get the local people to open up to her, when other reporters are unable to get interviews or comments.Wong reaches a turning point when Madame Mao and the rest of the Gang of Four are arrested. As she watches people rejoice in the streets, it dawns on her that the people hadn't believed in the Cultural Revolution for a long time. She feels betrayed and foolish because of her blind faith.Wong left China in 1980 to pursue a journalism degree at Columbia University, and then worked at various prestigious publications in the US and Canada for seven years. But in 1988, she was too curious to know what was really happening in China, so she asked her employer, the Toronto Globe, to transfer her. The third section of the book thus covers the late 1980s and early 1990s. The highlight of her career was covering the Tiananmen Square protests, the resulting massacre, and resulting fall out. This event served as the catalyst for shattering the last of Wong's illusions about communism in China. She declares herself no longer naïve and believes that she finally has a clear view of the "real" China. The last portion of the book presents some of Wong's most interesting interviews and perspectives on life in China, centering on human rights issues and social problems like how to uncover how many people really died in the Tiananmen Square massacre, poverty, the effects of the economic boom, retardation, drugs, prisoners, kidnapping women as brides, and the new robber barons of China.Wong left China in 1993 with no regrets. She concluded that without having spent 12 years living in and observing Red China, she would not have realized that what she was striving for all along was the socialist life style she enjoyed in Canada.Filled with interesting stories and well told, this book is a must read addition to your "good books about China" collection. As more and more people with Chinese roots return to this country, hopefully more voices like Wang's will emerge to give us perspective on what's happened between 1993 and the present, picking up where she has left off.
