Losada goes to all these kinda crazy sex workshops, and visits doctors and teachers and gurus to learn about female anatomy and sexuality. She's very open about her experiences and feelings---and though she keeps the name of her boyfriend confidential (referring to him only as T), she's also very honest about how all of this affects him and their relationship, too.For example, Losada focuses a lot of attention on OM workshops, where, no joke, women go to have a partner rub their clitoris for two 15-minute sessions. The first session is with a partner the woman came with (usually a significant other), but the second 15-minute session is with a stranger. The point of each session isn't to have or give an orgasm. It's really more about feeling the sensation of being touched. But the whole process is "out there," for sure---especially when you consider that Losada does this with her boyfriend. I don't know that I would ever have the guts to have a stranger rub my vag for 15 minutes, but it sure is entertaining reading about someone else doing it.Ultimately, I surprised myself by learning a lot from this book. I'm definitely not going to slack on my Kegel exercises from now on, I can tell you that... But even more important, I loved how Sensation celebrated a woman's sexual experience. The book reminded me that a woman's body deserves attention and love, compliments and gratitude, patience and adoration. It made me thankful for my body, for all it has done and for all the joy it brings me. When I finished the book I just felt really, really happy to be a woman. What a nice feeling, you know?

Wow! I read this book, freshly divorced, after hearing a podcast with Isabel Losada, and I remain ever-more optimistic that a world of great sex is out there. I come from a pretty waspy background and while I'm not ready to try OMing classes, I am thankful I found this book, and thankful Isabel wrote with such candor and bravery. The book tells of her explorations into the world of tantric sex and reading it made me feel like I just had an amazing conservation with a deeply soulful friend. It made me laugh, cry and reevaluate much from my past marriage. I walked away with a lot of hope for my own future sex life and a desire to read her many other books. What a treasure! I've already given it to a bunch of friends, some who love sex, and some who really struggle with it.

This book absolutely blew my mind. I felt like I was sitting having tea with a friend gabbing and sharing stories the whole time. I can't believe she fit this into a year! I can't say I want to recreate every point of her journey myself, but boy was it fun reading about it! Women's sexuality is such an important topic and she does it justice. I'm so happy I stumbled upon this book. Read it now!

Isabel Losada's style is bright, funny and assessable making this book a delight to read, although quite informative as well.She makes so many good points about how in the dark we are when it comes to issues of pleasure and sexuality. I appreciated how candid she was about her own experiences and enjoyed her observations and bravery in writing about these "taboo" subjects. More women need to read this book!

The author provides great insight into a subject which is somewhat delicate in nature. However, with her sense of humor, mixed with sensitivity and true emotion this book provides a wealth of information on helping to take a relationship to the next level of caring and compassion if that is what one chooses to do. For myself, this was a great read. At times would laugh out loud while reading. But took time to reflect on what I was reading and what I can improve on. So thank you Isabel for writing such a wonderful and thoughtful book!!!

Like the previous reviewer I detected an ELCA bias that would displease those who are in the Wisconsin or Missouri synods, but the significant attempt on the part of Gritsch to write a complete history of Lutheranism outweighs an occassionlly biased comment. This is the only book you will find that not only describes the dramatic events surrounding the life of Luther, but also goes on to describe the process whereby Lutheranism became a confessional religion in the mid to late 1500s. This is the only book that will give you a brief, yet intelligible discussion of the age of Lutheran Orthodoxy and then go on to discuss Pietism, the resurgence of confessionalism in the 1800s as well as Lutheran missions and Lutheranism in America. Some of the topics that Gritsch discusses, particularly the process of confessionalization, Orthodoxy and Pietism are often written about in German or Swedish so the English reader will especially benefit from these concise summaries.

Eric W. Gritsch, A History of Lutheranism (Minneapolis, Fortress Press, 2002) The first thing you need to do with this book is to take its title seriously. It is less a history of Lutherans than it is a history of Lutheran doctrines and confessions. It is not surprising that two-fifths of the book is dedicated to the first 60 years, between Luther's posting the 95 theses on the door of the Wittenberg Castle church in 1517 to the publication of the Book of Concord in 1580. It does not even spend more than a few sentences on the political events in the conflict between Protestant and Catholic countries, the 30 Years War, in 1618--1648 and the Peace of Westphalia. But we may be surprised at the political facts which do come up. In America, it is virtually unthinkable to imagine our religion determined by our government, but that was what the idea of Christendom, the combination in a one body the functions of worship and governance. One of the motives which drove theological disputes in central Europe was the right of the political ruler (King, Prince, Elector, Duke, Margrave, etc.) to determine their state religion, and enforce its observance by all residents of their state. One surprise is to read that Luther went to his grave hoping for a reunion of the German reformers and the Roman church. Echoes of this founding principle are subtle in modern Lutheranism, but they lived as active agenda item up to the Catholic Council of Trent (1545--1563), which launched the 'Counter-Reformation' and closed the door on resolution between Rome and the reformers. My primary interest in reading the book was to test my conjecture that compared to the Roman Catholics and the Calvinist influenced Reformed denominations, Lutheranism has a small theological footprint. With the Catholics, its an open and shut case. Neither Luther nor his legacy ever accepted the Roman belief in tradition and rationality, just as they never bought into the `rational theology' of the modern philosophers from Descartes to Kant. With the Calvinists, things are less certain. On the one hand, Lutherans in the 17th century produced their share of great tomes of theology, but almost all of these are forgotten, and there is no 20th century Lutheran theologian with works comparable to Swiss Reformed Karl Barth's Church Dogmatics. Lutherans became the foremost Biblical scholars of the world in the last two centuries, freeing scholarly research from dogmatic constraints. This is traceable to Luther's emphasis on basing faith solely on a critical understanding of the Bible, and a belief that the Bible meant what it said and said what it meant. Luther and his followers had no regard for theologians after Augustine (354--430). One of the powerful facets of Lutheran theology is adiaphora, the doctrine of separating things which are essential, such as the doctrine of `Affirming God's Loving Condescension as the Only Way to Salvation', from those things which are non-essential, such as genuflection. Another motive for my reading this book is to get some insight on Luther's doctrine of predestination, and how it compares with Calvin's advocacy of that belief. In The Bondage of the Will, Luther comes close to Calvin, but in the Articles of Concord, the matter is left to God's governance which is hidden from us, putting it beyond those matters about which we need to be concerned. The other side of the coin is that God made himself known through the life and works of Jesus Christ, which makes knowing about his teachings, life, and sacrificial death rise to the top of the list of important things for a Lutheran to be doing. This is why the Biblical readings and message are such an important part of Lutheran services, and the primary motive for the wealth of Lutheran Bible scholarship. It is the reason, in spite of Luther's emphasis on `the priesthood of all believers', that the educational requirements of Lutheran pastors is so high. The only thing which leaves us puzzled is the minute quantity of good Biblical interpretation we get in Sunday sermons and the empty seats when Lutherans offer adult Bible study. The issue of predestination may seem abstruse to the point of triviality, but it turns out it was one of the central doctrines which separated Lutherans before The Book of Concord, and it is one of the doctrines which separated many American Lutheran synods, one from another in the 19th century, thereby explaining why there are literally dozens of smaller independent Lutheran bodies outside of the 'liberal' ELCA and the 'conservative' Missouri Synod. This book explains the vigor behind Lutheran ecumenicalism within the U.S. and around the world, building communion with many other confessions such as the Moravians, the Episcopalians, and the Methodists. It suggests how Lutheran theologians and scholars such as Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Rudolph Bultmann can strip away `myth' from Christian thinking, leaving Bonhoeffer's path of `costly grace' based primarily on the teachings of Jesus in the Gospels. Our belief is that Jesus represents the visible God, which we should study and follow. Rational theology tries to penetrate the hidden God, which is a chimera to us. The book shows the importance of `confessions', similar to The Book of Concord, which define church beliefs. The idea was prominent in the 19th century, leading up to the historic `Confessing Church' formed to oppose surrender of German churches to Nazism. One reservation about the book is that the thinking of the last century, from thinkers such as Paul Tillich and Dietrich Bonhoeffer are not given more attention. I would be inclined to call this `A Short History of Lutheranism'. It is a very good place to start, after you read a biography of Luther.

Whilst I did find the author's approach a little dry at times, this book does do a good factual coverage of the history of the Lutheran Church especially from the 16th to 19th Centuries. I thought the coverage of the periods of "Orthodoxy" and "Pietism" to be quite well done.However the 20th Century (no real 21st Century coverage even though the book has a 2010 date for the 2nd Edition) seems to concentrate on Europe and USA. Whilst I do agree that these are significant fields of interest - given that the Author himself acknowledges the decline in the West compared to Africa and Asia - I thought much more could be said of the history of Lutheranism in those countries. I must admit, as an Australian Lutheran, I was quite disappointed how little was said about the history of Lutheranism in my region (Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea).Though this is a Second Edition, a lot of the "current" facts and figures seem to be still from the mid to late 70s at the latest. I would especially have appreciated seeing the numbers / growth of Lutheranism in Africa and Asia be at least 21st Century figures.This is a worthwhile book to give you the basics of Lutheran History but other sources are probably better if you want "recent" history.

Eric Gritsch covers an expansive topic with clarity and comprehesive insight. I love this book. When we traveled to Germany and Prague to visit sites associated with Luther and Jan Hus, I brought along this book as a reference. I learned as much rereading parts of "A History of Lutheranism" as I did from our tour guide.I wish this book were available for study when I was in seminary. I find Gritsch's writing style easy to understand and enjoyable. I highly recommend it to those who enjoy history.

I just finished reading this book by Mr. Banks and have to admit that it realistically shows and tells about the jobs around the NBA. It's definaltely suitable for any age.Well done!

This book is written like a 10 year old. When taking about careers I expected at least high school or better reading level. It actually didn't give out any info that was original. It was uninfformative and common sense would have provided more info.

This book deserves five stars, but I just can't give it due to some very sloppy mistakes in the diagrams. His schematic diagram on pg 135 is correct, but his diagrams for the very next two projects are completely screwed up. His diagram on page 147 isn't even remotely close to the 16F876A package - it's a 24 pin device not the 28 of the 16F876A. So you have to be careful and use a printout to guide your circuits. That said, this book takes you a little further down your development path. His programs have worked for me and I have gained a few new insights and programming shortcuts. Would I buy it again(?) yes, yes, yes. Basic (or in this case BASIC) mastery of the 16F876A seems to be an important step in anyone's development who programs with PBC or PBP. I highly recommend this book, but be warned about the schematic fopas!

Great book, nicely organized and they final put the cd in the middle of the book. I don't know how many cd were broken over the years with them on the rear page. A truly 5 star book.

When I started with PIC, Arduino was not available. I was attracted to using basic for the programming and wanted the improved efficiency over other the other hobbyist platform available at that time. The book is a great learning guide and I would recommend it as a PIC starting point.

Hard to imagine being very productive with this techonology without this guide. Good textbook type technical explanations and good meaningful examples.

I went through the projects in the book and also use it as reference for my own projects. A great way to learn about the PIC chip.

I have to say that if you are starting out with the pics then this is an excellent book, but the diagrams in it are at a few places slightly off if not for that it is perfect.

Taking a class on mechatronics and the core of this class is programing PICs, good price [compared to campus book store] and an easy to read reference

Randall Kennedy is the Michael R. Klein Professor of Law at Harvard Law School. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton and his law degree from Yale. He attended Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar and is a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. He is the author of five previous books, including Race, Crime, and the Law, for which he received the Robert F. Kennedy Book Award. A member of the bars of the Supreme Court of the United States and the District of Columbia, and of the American Philosophical Society and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, he lives in Massachusetts.

This would be a decent primer on affirmative action for someone relatively unfamiliar with the issues, and who wanted to hear mostly the talking points of affirmative action supporters. It does acknowledge the counter-arguments, but this is often a bit cursory and -- worse -- usually dismisses them by proclamation (just announcing that the arguments are wrong or that he doesn't find them compelling). It's left-leaning, of course, but not quite as maddeningly so as I'd feared. Way too much time and text is dedicated to historic quotations extolling the virtues of affirmative action in flowery language. Overall, it's high on rhetoric and low on facts and analysis. If you're already familiar with the affirmative action debates, the book won't be very interesting -- except in the sense that Kennedy is an interesting and sort of famous guy. (I got the "Audible" version, which he narrates himself). This biggest disappointment is that I got few, if any, new insights.

Most interesting and clear presentation even though I happen to disagree with the author. On the whole slightly biased but should make some readers comfortable about positive discrimination.

This is by far the best history and analysis of affirmative action in the United States that I've read. It presents a very detailed history of the policies, as well as presenting a very fair, measured account of the different sides of the debate, and the evolution of those positions over the past 60 years. Although Kennedy makes his position very clear (he's for affirmative action, and for race-based policies as one component of it), he always backs up his affirmations with evidence and very clear arguments. This is a must read for anyone interested in affirmative action policies in higher education or other areas in the United States, and in the rest of the world.

I haven't yet had a chance to finish it - too many other commitments. But the issue is extremely well presented, and the arguments are well thought out.

The advance blurb from William Julius Wilson on the back of my hardcover reads: "This is arguably the most clearheaded defense of affirmative action ever written." I have to assume that Wilson is a personal friend of Kennedy's. This book is anything but "clear headed"; it isn't even really an "argument."Consider the critical issue of audience. To whom is this book addressed? I would expect a book arguing for affirmative action to address an audience opposed to or suspicious of it. However, the book seems largely written to address left-liberal objections to affirmative action. The chapter titled "The Affirmative Action Policy Debate," considers mostly left-leaning objections to affirmative action. I don't have any public opinion polls in front of me, but I'm willing to bet my left kidney that public opposition to affirmative action doesn't stem from it being insufficiently radical. So why not address the objections held by the general public?Kennedy's rebuttals to the left-liberal objections he does discuss don't amount to much, in my opinion. They are the kind of small, speculative points that would fit more comfortably in a blog post (or in an Amazon book review) than in a full-fledged book. Consider, for example, his rebuttal to the book MISMATCH, by Richard Sander (which I have not read). Essentially, Sander argues that affirmative action harms recipients by placing them in competitive environments where they invariably are outmatched. If they attended schools with peers who share equivalent preparation, then they wouldn't enter a kind of "self-doubt" spiral, where relatively poor performance confirms doubt, which in turn feeds further poor performance. Consequently, the number of black attorneys would rise without affirmative action, as fewer would drop out of school or fail the bar exam.Kennedy spends many pages summarizing other people's rebuttals to Sander before getting to his own (weak) counterargument, which essentially is to argue: yes the mismatch effect may reduce the number of black lawyers but "[a]n alternative goal is to advance the black community as a whole, a goal that might be seen as better served by whichever admissions regime will assure the largest number of blacks at the most elite schools" (133).In the margin of my book I scribbled "proof?" After all, affirmative action has been around for 40 years; at some point we have to move from the theoretical to the empirical. Kennedy doesn't really explain what the "benefits" would be to the community, but surely they should be measurable, otherwise saying "maybe the black community as a whole benefits" is the kind of glib, non-falsifiable argument I would expect to hear at a dinner party. An argument that can't be falsified is probably not genuine.There's also reason to doubt whether or not Kennedy seriously believes that the "black community as a whole benefits" from affirmative action because, only ten pages later, he responds to another left-liberal critique: that affirmative action recipients are overwhelmingly mixed-race or are children of immigrants from Africa or the Caribbean, who are not positioned to "provide leadership in the continuing struggle against African American subordination" (144). Kennedy seems to concede this reality but meekly offers (in my paraphrase) "don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good."However, if it's true that two-thirds of affirmative action recipients have a relatively weak association with the mass of African-Americans, can we really say that they are likely "to advance the black community as a whole" because they have an elite law degree, which is Kennedy's non-falsifiable rebuttal to Sander? Maybe these facts can be reconciled and harmonized, but Kennedy doesn't attempt to and I can't on my own do it.The remainder of the book contains little to discover. One long chapter looks at various Supreme Court opinions and criticizes the "diversity" rationale for affirmative action. Yet Kennedy doesn't provide a competing rationale that is as clear. Instead, he argues that affirmative action should remedy past oppression, which is variously described as "discrimination," "segregation," or "an affront to basic human dignity." Since his example of each is drawn from black history, it isn't obvious whether or not there is a straightforward application to non-black recipients of affirmative action. I was hoping for a clearer discussion. After reading this chapter, I kind of felt as if "diversity" was a more intelligible rationale for affirmative action (and an easier principle to administer) than anything Kennedy had to offer by way of contrast.This is the third book in a row in which Kennedy has discussed affirmative action. In SELLOUT (2008), he included a long essay on Clarence Thomas's views on affirmative action (that took up about a third of the book). And in THE PERSISTENCE OF THE COLOR LINE (2011), Kennedy used affirmative action as a frame for interpreting public debates surrounding President Obama's election and the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court. Now there's this book. As the books pile up, the analysis isn't getting any sharper.Will there be a fourth?

I took a look at the 8 previous reviews and cannot believe my eyes at the negative views of this book expressed by several of them. I would gladly give this book 10 stars if that were possible, as I think the author has written an honest and very sophisticated analyses of a very complicated and politically sensitive subject. I ran into it while preparing to write a new concluding chapter, to a book on race in American law and politics, which tries to explain why there has been so little progress in race relations since I wrote the first edition in the early 1990s. My college teaching career extended from 1964 to 2000 (with a year off to be a Fellow in Law and Political Science at the Harvard Law School--prior to Professor Kennedy's arrival), and I taught many courses in political philosophy, law (including substantial focus on law and race), and for the last 10 years a class specifically on Race in American Law and Politics. I found Kennedy's summary of the leading court decisions and his descriptions and interpretations of the various issues, especially in higher education, to be extremely accurate and fair. While I do not completely agree with everything he says, it is all reasonable. The one thing that really puzzled me is the book's title: FOR DISCRIMINATION. Perhaps it refers to the fact that he acknowledges that affirmative action really does lead to discriminatory treatment of individuals. (He suggests that the rage for "diversity" may be an attempt to package this discrimination to make it more acceptable to the courts.) I can only agree with him on this, and also on his belief that affirmative action can be a good thing if done carefully. Or perhaps the title is an attempt to sucker bigots seeking academic legitimacy for their attitudes to read it and perhaps be convinced by some of his arguments before they realize they have been "had." (I doubt that this latter explanation of the title is correct, though.)
