Five stars! I am at an “infant” beginner level to French and I found this book absolutely helpful. The few points I love are: 1. Short paragraphs accompanied with explanations for some words/phrases. This makes the studying process not too overwhelmed, I felt accomplished after each paragraph done. 2. There is a recap of the words/phrases at the end of each story so I can review/test my progress. This double reinforcement works nice with learning a language. 3. The topics are common daily situations, so you know, whatever you most see everyday, there is a French word for it in the book! 4. The AUDIO makes EVERYTHING better. Listening to what I just studied make things stick to my head much better. Plus I can listen to these on the go, very convenient.This is how I used this books: I read the recap at the end of each story first, then listen to the audio to see how much words I could tell, then study the detailed story.

I thought French: Short Stories for Beginners + Audio was a great book. I took French in High school and 2 semesters in college, and it was a refresher and very easy to follow.I wasn't sure that I would be able to follow after years of not reading french (and not really speaking a lot of it). But i found it extremely helpful that the glossary of words within each story assisted in translation.I think this book is great for someone who may need to learn french quickly, for conversational French, someone traveling to French speaking countries. I would recommend this to anyone with an interest in French. It's easy to read and easy to follow the story lines. the MP3 version is VERY helpful in pronunciation. Many people find out hard to follow just the breakdown of words. they may grasp the concept, but be phonetically challenged. Hearing it spoken is a plus!

This book is a great way to learn French. I have studied French before but I learn best when I am fully immersed in a language. This was a great way to read stories and learn at the same time. It takes some studying and real thinking about the use of words and the order difference from English. But it is a very good way to perfect your French. I purchased the book French: Short Stories for Beginners + French Audio: Improve your reading and listening skills in French. Learn French with Stories (French Short Stories Book 1). I got the Kindle Edition. I love it! I took three years of French in High School. But, that was 15 years ago. I have retained some very basic knowledge of the language. I want to pick it up again. I thought this might be a good way to go. I was right. The book is made up of short stories making it interesting and easy to read even if you only have a few minutes at a time. Within the stories are bold print words and short phrases. After each paragraph, those words are listed with their translations. So, when I got stuck, I just peeked ahead to the list and could get moving again. At the end of the chapter there is a full list of the vocabulary for review. I was always better at reading French than listening to a conversation in French. The audiobook download (the instructions are at the end of the Kindle Edition book) is a terrific part of the book. You get the best of both worlds! After I brush up my reading skills, I can use it as an audiobook to improve pronunciation and conversational skills. At the end of the book there is contact information, if you should have any problems. They really have you covered! This is a fun learning tool. I just pop my Kindle in my bag and I am studying French on my lunch break and even while waiting in the doctor's office. I would highly recommend this book to anyone starting out or brushing up French language skills.

I couldn't put it down, so well done and entertaining. Fantastic characters and the story flowed like water. I loved the book and I will have to go to the movie when it is released in 2018

I loved the story. The fact that Ophelia is more than a dishrag or doormat for the other characters to use and abuse made me so happy. Her character has always been somewhat of an afterthought, though an actress's dream role to be sure. However, there were so many typos that at times I had to re-read a paragraph or sentence to get the meaning based on the context. I really did love the story though and that kept me going. From start to finish this book was well written and the story and plot twists were all entertaining and involved the reader to the extent that I almost didn't mind the typos. My mother always jokes that I'm a frustrated proof reader so you can imagine how this drove me crazy.

I really enjoyed the satisfying resolution of the story of Ophelia and Hamlet. I loved the work of the convent Ophelia did with the sisters. It was appropriately reverent and miraculous.

I found this to be a very interesting and intriguing book. It is split into three roughly equal parts. Part one being Ophelia's life pre-Hamlet, part one two being during the events of Hamlet, and part three being post-Hamlet. The aspects of court life and convent life for women are wonderfully depicted, and, as far I know, quite accurate.Pros:Very interestingGives a nice back story and personality to Ophelia which is not given in HamletHistorically accurate in regards to court and convent life for womenCons:There some typos in the book -- these may just a problem with my Kindle since they are constant throughout the bookI found part two to be somewhat dull as it is mainly a retelling of Hamlet

I read this just before I began to teach Hamlet in an AP Lit class, and I was amazed at the author's depth of knowledge of Shakespeare. Although some things, such as Ophelia and Hamlet marrying, are not in the play, they fit. The marriage and Ophelia's death are reminiscent of Romeo and Juliet. There are so many questions unanswered about Hamlet, and Shakespeare didn't include stage directions, so many interpretations are possible. The author simply does what a director does when he stages the Shakespeare's play play-she fills in the gaps.

Ophelia was an interesting twist on the Hamlet story (one of my favorites by Shakespeare) and was told from Ophelia's perspective. It was an interesting angle to see the story from, and carried on past where the play ends. I enjoyed this twist on a historical classic. I now want to find a lot more stories written like this where they tell old stories over from a new perspective, I really enjoyed the plot twist!

Hamlet is my favorite work of Shakespeare & I always found Ophelia fascinating & wanted to know more about her. That's why this story caught my eye. In short, this did not fulfill my longing. I literally arrived at the end & realized that for all that Ophelia told me, I felt absolutely nothing & no connection to her. I had not expected that & I find that I'm disappointed to be left so blank. That I felt more for Ophelia in the little we get of her, by comparison, in the original than I do here where she speaks from start to finish is jarring. I found that the writing was just fine but there was no passion to the story.Some of the other portrayals seemed a bit off from the original but I was able to allow those & not let them hold me back in enjoyment. Possibly my expectations were too high. I came in wanting to know who Ophelia was & I finished in the same place so I've neither lost nor gained.And one final word, the Kindle edition has more than a few typos (increases in frequency as you approach the end) & this does really take one out of the story.

Others have reviewed the book, the story.I will speak to the Kindle edition, which is very messed up. It's all about words spelled incorrectly, run together, etc. I think it is because the book was scanned into some kind of program which converts it to an electronic format. And when it does, letters are run together. Like if you look at the word 'carried' from a distance, you could mistake the 'c' for an 'e', and the 'ri'for an 'n'. So 'carried' becomes 'earned'. And they used this word a lot, so every time you need to remind yourself that earned means carried. BS. And this is just one example. This is going on every other page, and after a while it becomes very tiresome. Someone needs to upgrade the program so it actually works. And whoever publishes the Kindle edition needs to proof read it. No excuse for this. And no way to get your money back from Amazon, once you download it.If you are the author of this book, you are getting shafted ! And think how uncool it is to have a bad review - contact your agent, your publisher, Amazon - and demand better.If you are a potential reader, I do not recommend the Kindle edition. It is very frustrating to continually put up with this.

This book is packed with a lot of examples of using controls, and lists the hierarchy of the MFC.But I was unable to open the project examples from the CD with VC++ 6 standard. It does cover a majority classes, however it lacks content dealing with code, so you will have to know C++ very well to use this text.The entire book is in eformat on the CD which is good, and some of the files could be used which makes the book good for all round reference.

This book is a great introduction to MFC and ATL. I think it help programmers to understand MFC but it also makes you confused. E.g. in the first chapter Views and Docs are explained but in next chapters the Docs are Views aren't used as they were explained and somtimes they aren't even used at all. Simple functions such as scroll bars aren't explained but Controls (Progress Bars etc.) are much easier to use and they are explained in detail. The book is also loaded with ERRORs. The ATL and COM chapters are explained in details and the books gets its 2 stars for that.

The "user level" on this book centers on "accomplished". Nothing could be farther from the truth. The book covers 10 or so sample apps/controls that are basically nothing but "run the wizard, and add some code". No real discussion of MFC and how to use it, and the ATL examples are ridiculously simple -- not one of them has any graphic components. If you know nothing about MFC and VC++ 5.0's wizards, then maybe you might want to read this book. But maybe not.

It's amazing how much I enjoyed reading about a subject that I didn't really want to hear about! As a food fanatic, the last thing I thought I wanted to know about was food waste. Huge portions, sure, bring them on. Unhealthy, fatty, sugar-laden junk food, I can't get enough. Information on the fast food business, latest marketing temptations, and unhealthy food trends? Sure, I live for this information. But food waste? Doesn't sound appealing to me. Even if it's out there, and growing as a problem, I probably don't want to hear about it.That's what I thought. Jonathan Bloom's book is absolutely riveting, and his areas of exploration are so varied, complex, and well described that I ate this book up like a Taco Bell triple crunchwrap! This man has done his homework, and his writing method is so entertaining that you tend to forget that you are learning all kinds of horrible facts and truths about food waste in our modern world. Examples abound of all kinds of preventable waste going on all around us, from the farms that feed us, the supermarkets that provide the offerings, and our own lazy and entitled habits at home and in restaurants. The most startling revelations, to me, was the prevalence of this activity all around us, and how our cultural attitudes have fostered notions that there's absolutely nothing wrong with the way we squander and waste food. Best of all, Bloom offers solutions that are available to us right now, and simply require our own cooperation to set in motion. For a book that I began reading with obvious reservations came a truly inspiring and exhilirating experience, and taught me a lot about a subject in which I thought I was well-versed. Highly recommended.

A fairly good book exploring, in a mostly critical and adaptionist view, why we find pleasure in the things we do. The earliest chapters, exploring baseline concepts such as food and sex, tended to be the most grounded with the most research backing. Later chapters tended to veer too much toward speculation and philosophy.The author also tends to be a bit hit and miss in narrative abilities. At times he's engaging and the style is not unlike "Freakonomics". However, where that book typically took time to really dig apart some of the cited examplesor experiments, this book tends to just reference studies or examples in a passing fashion.Another minor issue I have with the book is that the author tends to try and explain things as having a REASON or a PURPOSE too much. For example, in a chapter about art, he seemed to get hung up on their needing to be an evolutionary reason for this element of humanity. However the author has either forgotten or doesn't know that there are many examples of evolution not doing away with adaptions that are no longer relevant but are not overtly harmful. For example, male nipples (a remnant of the fact we are all conceived female), 3rd molars (largely redundant based on how heavily our food is processed now and how little chewing we do, relatively speaking), the appendix (again, largely irrelevant due to not having to eat raw vegetatian all the time), or a set of muscles in the shoulders that are largely useless now that we don't spend our days hanging in trees. So, point being: our appreciation of art may not have an evolutionary advantage but merely be a nice side effect of having a brain geared towards open-ended problem solving and non-linear critical thinking (as an aside, they've found that proto-humans had both more white matter in their brains and were leaving many more examples of art than Neanderthals were, but how would a tendency to waste time painting pictures have helped proto-humans survive AND thrive better than our now dead ancient cousins?). And the author does this multiple times, not bringing up or considering the possibility of the "redundant" factor in evolutionary history (although he does on occasion mention the possibility of certain ideas or elements being just fortunate side effects, but only in a "last possibility" sort of way.Overall it's a good book. It introduced some new ideas about human psychology and evolution to me, and brought up some interesting points about what we prioritize in terms of pleasure. However, the book tends to be a little light on its explorations and in-depth discussions, especially in later chapters.

Pure trash. Wish I could give it a zero. I'm worried about my kids going to college a few years from now. If a Yale professor can advocate cannibalism, preach how religion is just a scare tactic for parents to keep their kids in line, preach that "abstinence in our youth is the bane of America's moral system and the worst attack on our sexual psyche, then describe the many ways of sexual pleasure - and not get in trouble or have any consequences, I'm not going to pay for their college at an Ivy League school and I'll certainly research the sort of teachers at those colleges. A very sick, disturbing book. Terrible.
