Underrated. This is a somewhat obscure selection but reads like a novelization of "The Hangover". Sporadic, happenstance, and unapologetic are the best ways to describe this. The protagonist is a man who does nothing in moderation. This fuels the narrative. In short, this is a quick, action-packed, and introspective read.
I loved this book! Everybody in the reading group liked this book! A road trip that brought back memories of fascinating trips across our unique country. A pictures of Bulgaria at the same time. A love story. And a story of art itself with an artful presentation. A really good read!
I just finished the book. I read it slowly, absorbing the passion for life, creativity, photography, and all that the characters had go offer. I am in the assimilation mode after I read a book. This is a book that keeps on giving. It has so much to offer that I keep thinking about the different aspects of the novel. My friends and I liked the three ways of writing. The flashbacks in italic print, the conversation in short choppy sentences and the narrative. It all worked perfectly to move the story ahead. Well done.
The author has an original voice. I found him to be compelling. I would love to talk to him about his ideas

The framework of the great American trip is well known (even in Bulgaria, starting with Aleko K.) so ZK had a tall barrier to jump over at the start. His twist is to add a parallel love story, drugs and photography to the mix. Even though it's well written and commendable effort, it falls short of being original and special.
Zachary Karabashliev creates a darkly humorous, entertaining, and compulsively readable novel so full of life that it bursts its way through several different genres. First, it is a love story, though in this case, it is a love story gone awry since main character Zack Karabashliev has been living alone for the past nine days, his wife having left him. It is also a story of the immigrant experience, in that Zack and his wife Stella met as students in Varna, Bulgaria, in 1988, and came to the United States as graduate students. The novel also becomes a quest, when Zack, in despair over Stella's absence, decides to drive to New York to meet friends, traveling from San Diego through the southwest and across the Mississippi and Midwest, stopping at small towns and observing how others live. What makes this novel most unusual, however, is that it is also a well-developed metaphysical exploration of what it means to be alive, how we see our lives in the continuum of time, and where and whether happiness and an appreciation of beauty fit into the picture.As the novel opens, Zack is reliving memories and dreams of Stella at the same time that he remembers conversations he has had with her. Since he is too distraught to go to work, he decides one day to drive to Mexico, entering Tijuana on foot, where he observes two men brutally kicking a prone body and creating horrific injuries. When the two then attack and try to kidnap him, he responds by slashing them with a broken glass and using their van to escape back across the border. Inside the van, he finds a duffel bag with seventy pounds of marijuana, and decides that now is a good time to leave for New York.Parallel narratives of Zack reminiscing about his life, his friends and family, and his love for Stella when he lived in Bulgaria alternate with details of his drive to New York. Gradually the reader learns the backstory of Zack's education, his various jobs in music and photography, his marriage to Stella, and his financial success at the same time that s/he also learns about Stella herself, an artist whose work has suddenly been "discovered." His adventures on the road are often hilarious in their emotional contrasts with his memories of Stella. Halfway through his trip, however, Zack crashes emotionally and begins his metaphysical exploration, continuing to talk with Stella and relive his memories at the same time that he is asking: "What's happening, God? What's the point of all this? What's the point of me even looking for a point?" Later Zack explores the idea of the continuum of life, asking "What if all of it is wrong? What if everything starts with death...and ends up in the womb?" and "What if we live not our real lives but a reflection of them?"Ultimately, Zack learns that "the one and only sure thing is the now, which is the beginning and the end, the before and after, 18% gray and 100% now, and nothing else." Author Zachary Karabashliev here creates a novel which offers much to think about at the same time that it is also funny, poignant, and chock full of twists, turns, and surprises. This is a novel of the now - 100% fun, with only 18% gray.
This is a story of life. The author tells his story purely and without regard or romanticism. It is rather difficult NOT to get inside the character's head as you read. As a reader, I forged a bond with the character, Zack, that goes beyond merely having things in common with him. The author allows you to see exactly what Zack is going through and thinking at all times. Sometimes, of course, you do not like him--and that is precisely what makes this book so real. Zack's flawed nature is left on the pages of this novel for the reader to make what he can of him. What this story isn't about, however, is a bag of marijuana. This is the driving force for the novel--it gives the character a purpose to move through space. As Zack does so, however, he moves through time. There is an underlying theme of time in this story that subtly shines through because of the way it is written. As the character moves forwards through space (in his attempt to drive to New York), he jumps back and forth through time. He tells the story of his previous life and punctuates that with short, sweet "in-the-now" conversations between himself and his wife, Stella. This array leaves you, as a reader, unsatisfied and wanting more and more, and more and more. It is difficult to put this book down precisely because you just want to get to the next part. You just want to know what crazy thing Zack is going to do next. The plot is lined with impeccable humor and intense emotion; I laughed out loud and cried and sobbed (and I'm not one to cry at books). I could write about every detail but there are just too many. Zack's attention to the little things is immensely noticeable in the novel, from his description of Avenue Revolucion in Tijuana to his intense evaluation of the insecure girl at the bar pulling at her sweater.Throughout the novel, Zack opens up more and more to his readers and we begin to feel more comfortable with him. I fell into a rhythm with the book at one point where I nearly forgot he was trying to get to New York. This rhythm is broken and smashed completely once Zack reaches New York, and for sake of not ruining the story I'm going to stop here.This is a story of life. Not just Zack's life--anyone's life. So laugh with him, cry with him, get enraged with him, get enraged AT him, and leave room for the unexpected. If anyone can shock you, this author and his character will. This book will stay with you long after you put it down, and so will its meaning.
