The sport of football has been under the microscope for several months due to issues on many fronts: domestic violence incidents involving professional players, the overall culture of the game and the safety of the players’ long-term health due to the concerns about the number of concussions suffered. All of those topics and more are explored in this excellent book on a high school football team by Kostya Kennedy.The book takes the reader through the 2014 football season of New Rochelle High School, a New York City suburban school district. The area is a melting pot of all levels of affluence, of various races and various family dynamics. The football program, led by coach Lou DiRienzo, is one of the more successful teams for many years. The players are proud to be wearing the Huguenots jersey and many come back to visit.One of these former players, Ray Rice, came back to visit during that 2014 season when he was the flashpoint of the issue of domestic violence in professional football. This section of the book was a good example of the main characteristic of this book that I thought made it an excellent read: it was fair, free of inflammatory talking points and explained the issue in a thorough manner.Concerns about player safety and concussions are also explored from the point of view of coaches, players and parents. The culture of the game will make players not want to suggest that anything is wrong with them physically. There is concussion treatment protocol that all teams must follow, but it relies on player self-reporting, Because of this, according to a quote in the book, “There may be as many concussions that go unrecognized as go recognized on the football field.” But as to WHY this is the case – the culture of the game – is explained quite well through the book.Kennedy does address the question most often posed to parents – would he let his son play football? Very good quality, a classic by this time. Many Goddesses and holidays are included on calendar and "moon month" dates. There is also a lot of space on each date to write in extra holidays that are meaningful to the owner of the book. Correspondences for the Goddesses are included, though not literally the same. Good for invocations, bringing significance to calendar dates. Excellent reference for when the internet is not available.

Nice guide and addition to your library. Not comprehensive but certainly does what it sets out to do.

It got here faery purrily, and it is purry.I like that she includeth so many goddesses from various religious backgrounds (including the saints, as I'm Christo-Wiccan-Pagan,) though I have some qualms with a few of her comparisons, lol.

I like the idea of having a book to refer to regarding Goddess in reference to days of the week and monthly. For someone fairly new to the Goddess, you might have trouble navigating through the book or finding the proper use for it. Should probably get this book if you are not a newbie.

I have the paperback copy of this book and am ordering my second copy. My original is very worn. I have been using it for the last many years (nearly ten) to collect inspirational quotes in. I write one quote per day and it is nearly completed!Now I am buying a second copy to transfer the old quotes into, change some around and so forth. I had been putting them in almost randomly, but I want to rewrite them to correlate better with the Goddess days that Diane cites.

I don't see how I lived without it!!!

This book was wonderful.What appealed to me the most was how much this book is aimed at actually USING the knowledge given. Quite often, I find books on foraging that are aimed more at giving you the idea that a food is edible, but without much practical knowledge on how to use it.This is the exact opposite. The plants are listed alphabetically, but in the beginning is a listing of all 4 seasons and every plant that is ready to be harvested during that season is listed. What can be eaten or used on a plant is mentioned explicitly. There were also frequently tips on how to harvest more easily, how to prepare foods for cooking, or even how to cook/prepare the food itself. Pictures were clear, and a description of where to find the plants was very useful as well.Just overall a really practical, dead useful guide for foraging for the beginner, or for someone who might be more of an experienced amateur forager.

Wow, this was much more than I expected; very accessible and extensive. This is a substantial book with excellent pictures and a straight forward style for harvesting and preparation. As a denizen of the sonoran desert I am appreciating the completeness of this book for foraging. This is not really a field guide with academic descriptions or much on the ecology of specific species but, excellent for gathering the wild. Detailed identification process, explicit cautions, regionally organized species lists, seasonal species lists, ecosystem species lists. Great for those starting out and useful for those with experience too.

I have started a collection of books about the finding and uses of plants in the Sonoran Desert. So far this is by far my favorite. It's full of photos, when, where, and how to find each plant, and what parts are edible and or medicinal. After quickly browsing through it the first time, my dogs and I were off for a hike through the desert, and I was amazed at how many edible plants I could recognize immediately. I had considered several to be nothing but weeds before. I love this book and I am thrilled to be able to apply it to real life and real use. My guests for dinner are often amazed at how tasty my wild gatherings are and how much food the " barren" desert has to offer. I will be utilizing this book for a long time and I can't wait for seasons to pass so I can harvest new and tasty desert plants. This book is loaded with good photos making plant identification easy. If I am not sure about a plant I take a photo of it and then compare it to the book. Now I am putting a plant harvesting backpack together, so I can carry the book and necessary tools with me for harvesting. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know what to fine dine on safely out in the wild desert. I have even found several tasty plants right in my yard! How amazing is that? This, in my opinion, is the ultimate in healthy organic eating, and the price is perfect!

This is generally not a bad book. It does cover a huge geographic range that has many ecosystems, which leads to it being vague in parts. It tends to have one page or article to cover an entire series of similar plants, without many pictures showing the different species. And, well, in general the pictures are not very helpful. Often there is only one, and it may be a close up of the fruit, without a lot of different views to help with identification. For instance the elderberry article has a long-range picture of a bush that could be almost anything, and a close up of a berry cluster- no discernible picture of a leaf. Oddly, there is NO section covering poisonous plants of the region as it usual in such books, so that readers can avoid them. So for instance one plant description warns not to harvest it until it flowers so that it can be differentiated from Death Camas, yet there is no picture of Death Camas anywhere in the book. Hmm. Bit of an omission, that. So, those are my biggest complaints. A lesser complaint is that the author seems to have a preference for rare and unusual plant names. For instance the acorn article is titled "bellota", and the huckleberry article is titled "farkleberry." What the heck? Why not use the most common names that most people know? Heck, "mast" would have been better than "bellota"! A few use the genus name, such as "capita" instead of saltbush, but come on, list it as saltbush- that's the most prevalent common name in the U.S. If only to try to keep some consistency with 99% of the other foraging books on the market. And then, in places where the genus name would arguably be most appropriate- in the articles that cover many similar species- it is NOT used. For instance, opuntia instead of prickly pear. Very inconsistent.

Great pictures for identification and instructions for harvesting and processing. I was happy to find plenty of plants covered in my area of the Texas Hill Country, when most books only have a couple of plants for this region.

The color pictures are the most useful part; to help identify plants. Next are the instructions about what parts of plants to eat and how to prepare them. Not everything is covered but with the internet available, missing information can be easily found.

I read it in two days, and marked all of the local plant species I recognized! This book includes pictures, recipes, and harvesting instructions.It's not 100% comprehensive, and doesn't cover plants that aren't region-specific (for example, you won't find plants that grow in this region AND the rest of the US), so maybe a broader foraging book would cover the rest. But I'll be giving this book a permanent spot on my shelf :)

Clear explanations, accurate info and years of experience of real life foraging by the author make this work a must have for anyone who is serious/sincere about foraging in this part of the world.

I've been a fan of LP books for over two decades. In fact, I had been making use of an earlier edition of their Turkey book for several years even though I am Turkish (and live in Turkey). I decided to upgrade to the most recent edition before visiting Gaziantep, a town in Southeastern Turkey. It turns out that the whole Southeastern Turkey, with the exception of Mount Nemrut National Park, has been left out of this edition. This is probably because the authors did not visit the region because of security concerns: The foreign ministries of many countries had/have been advising their citizens not to travel to the area. The security situation is much better these days, but nonetheless, Lonely Planet should have mentioned that they are not covering one seventh/eighth of the country! Not only they ever mention this, the guide is misleading about the omission: The region is supposedly in their "Eastern Anatolia" section (marked in that chapter), but none of the cities are covered. So anyone not knowledgeable about the country would simply think there is nothing interesting to see there other than Mount Nemrut, which could not be so far from the truth- as confirmed by the detailed coverage of the region in earlier editions. Moreover, if you go to Lonely Planet's Gaziantep web page, after some basic info, there is a link to this book instead of warning readers that the city is not covered in the book- also very misleading. I have read before that new editions of some Lonely Planet books are much worse than earlier editions. In fact, that's why I did not get their books for a couple of countries I visited recently. It seems that their Turkey guide is the latest casualty:(...

I could not be more disappointed. I bought the Kindle edition of this book since I was going to a conference in Trabzon, and I learned more from the taxi driver who took us to the hotel than this book. In the past I have liked LP guides, but their section on Trabzon and surroundings was cursory and out of date. They included only a few of the city sites, and missed a huge fortress and a number of historical buildings. The section on the surroundings missed the mountain village of Cal, which has an ecotourism center where you can eat traditional food and dance, then visit a large cave with an underground river perched in the mountainside. None of the hikes in the surrounding mountains are included. The restaurant section was out of date and the description of traditional food left out a number of signature dishes. But the worst was they never described the unique culture of the Black Sea region, which is populated by Laz and other ethnic groups with their own music and culture, such as the playing of the kemanche, an instrument unique to that region. Black sea folk dancing, never mentioned, is famous throughout Turkey. There was no mention of the festivals venues where a visitor could see local culture. Like the last reviewer, I would argue that LP only really covers Istanbul and gives other regions short shrift, but I am also appalled by the lack of research into the area by writers paid to do it. I can’t figure out how to return a Kindle book, but I will never buy a Lonely Planet travel guide again.

If you happen to have earlier copies of the LP guide to Turkey, do not buy this one. A cursory look though the book reveals that former significant destinations are no longer included, Urfa, for example, Van, Kuthaya, Afyon, Gaziantep, Beysehir . I stopped checking the index for other omissions. We are returning this book.

Wonderful to still be able to get this splendid guide in book form that you can carry around with you. We used it all the time. A not-so-obvious benefit is that it's always available unlike internet access that may be problematic and/or expensive when traveling outside the U.S.

An excellent guidebook, delivered super quick. Exactly what you need for a trip to Turkey!

I bought this kindle edition based on the excellence of the Greece edition. This guide really is not up to the same standard. I would suggest that the editors take a look at the Greece edition and edit the next edition of the Turkey guide accordingly.
