My son loves this book. We actually saw it at Hollywood Studios at Disney World this year when we went but I was able to find it here on Amazon at less than half the cost of the Disney gift shop it was in (near the newer Star Wars meet and greet area). I'm glad I waited and got him this one. The information inside is pretty detailed and a little violent (creatures eating/slicing open other creatures) in some of the hand drawn photos but isn't too bad since its just a drawing. My son loves to read about the creatures and then try to draw them himself.

 This hardcover is actually texture-pressed with scale patterns from a creature I can't identify. It has a nice touch.This is a field guide to the wildlife from the Star Wars planets. It's organised by planets and the included ones are Tatooine, Hoth, Dagobah, Naboo, Bespin, Endor, Yavin 4 and Coruscant. There's a short introduction describing each ecosystem -- fiery, freezing, vaporous, etc.The illustrations are sketches drawn with pencils and colour markers, supposedly by a zoologist in the field, but is actually none other than Terryl Whitlatch. They are all wonderfully detailed showing the creatures in their natural habitat, be it hunting, caring for their young, chilling out, or even on sale at some market on Coruscant. The attention to skin textures is very nice. You can almost get a feel just by looking. Beautiful colours also.Besides the paintings are field notes filling in on information like feeding patterns, mating habits, herding instincts and defensive mechanisms of these fascinating beings.I didn't know that the giant space slug is really that huge at 900 metres until I looked up the size of a blue whale for comparison, which is 33 metres. The space slugs gets nutrients from asteroids and you can see how the intestines work. Some of the designs you'll see are inspired by Earth animals. The Opee Sea Killer has characteristics from lobster (shell), frog (long sticky tongue), anglerfish (that glowing forehead tip) and the arowana (breeding little babies in the mouth).Some of the designs might look a bit far fetch but hey, this is Star Wars, this is science fiction. I guess anything goes but many are believable for the most part, in art and concept.This is a very good book for all fans of Star Wars and animal art.(More pictures are available on my blog. I got this as a gift for a 7-year old girl who is a blossoming Star Wars fan who is interested in science--as far as 7-yr olds go.She LOVED this book. "What's that? Daddy what movie is that monster from. Ooooh that's neat. I remember that one."The artwork is mature enough for me (a mid-30s Dungeons and Dragons, Fantasy fan) to enjoy and straightforward enough for this young girl to enjoy.

My Son cannot put this book down and that is coming from a kid who generally doesn't like animals. I think pictures and diagrams read more like schematics to a robotic lab than a field guide which explains why he likes it. There is very technical and creative language which for the interested youth reader will help expand their vocabulary. I highly recommend the hard cover since the book gets used so much and spends much of its life in his backpack. Btw he is 11 years old.

There isn't much bad I can say about this book. It's great to see the wonderful illustrations of some of the most talked about (and never seen) creatures of Star Wars.The artwork is top notch all around with loads of new beasties from the places you know in the Star Wars universe. The book is rather large for a "field guide". I know I wouldn't be throwing this in my backpack, but the (what I'm assuming to be) dewback hide cover of the book is great. And the comparative size chart on the inside covers is great. Yep, that's a Space Slug taking up all four inside covers...Overall, if you have any interest in the creatures of SW, this book will not disappoint. Looking at it, you can tell why it's retailing for $.... It is, just simply, an outstanding book.

Got this book for my 12yr old son for Christmas and he loves the book. The drawings in the book are more artistic and stylized like a field journal would be, they are not super detailed. That said he's discovered all kinds of new beasts and creatures across the galaxy.

This is a beautiful coffee table book with lovely illustrations and is true to Star Wars.

This book goes through every known Star Wars creature and on top of this, it gives a detailed description of various facts about each and every creature. While Middle English poetry isn't for everybody, these are two masterfully crafted poems. My favorite is the Alliterative Morte, although both are great!

[Postscript: Since writing the review below, I was able to get hold of Mary Hamel's edition of the alliterative Morte Arthure, published by Garland in 1984. I found it satisfactory in every respect & would enthusiastically recommend it for its text, notes, glossary (line 35, helde of: "owed allegiance to"), and introductory discussion. However, I should note that Krishna's edition, in which I note a small oversight below, is generally very good. But when Hamel says she's thought about EVERY word, I must say, I believe she's the only editor since Bjorkman who actually has. For the stanzaic poem, I plan on using the old school edition "Le Morte Arthur: A Middle English Metrical Romance," edited by Samuel B. Hemingway, Houghton-Mifflin, 1912.]Before I criticize this edition, I'd like to state that I know Larry Benson is a phenomenal scholar of Middle English, that when he chooses to make editions for serious purposes, he does an exemplary job, and that the defects in this book therefore arise entirely from a misconceived effort to cater to "readers who have had little or no training in Middle English." I do not believe that even such readers are well served by the awkward resultant compromises.I got disgusted with this edition in line 1 of the alliterative Morte Arthure. Then I got worried about the adequacy of the fuller and more scholarly edition of the same poem by V. Krishna--in line 35. I write this review just in case your sense of what you want from such books agrees with mine.The TEAMS edition under review has been aggressively modernized (more so than is the normal practice of this series: the preface explains that this is because Benson's edition was previously published by Bobbs-Merrill in another series, but defends the text printed as "authentic in all material respects"). Benson's preface confusingly follows up a high-minded insinuation that the MS text has been corrected because it is phonetically misleading ("even for the relatively advanced student, a faithful representation of the manuscript forms is frequently a misrepresentation of the language itself...long study and much practice are necesary before a student can easily distinguish betwen significant and insignificant spelling variations or can tell when a later scibe has foisted a 15th c. sound change off on a 14th c. poet") with an admission that he has, when push came to shove, simply replaced 14th c. English with Modern English spellings (chosen for "their faithfulness in representing the sound probably used by, OR AT LEAST UNDERSTANDABLE TO, the author...where I have had to make a choice...I have chosen ease in recognition, preferring a small error in sound or a slight deviation from the form the author may have used").When I read the preface, I naturally applied the benefit of the doubt & put my faith in "small" and "slight." But I quickly got the sense that what we really have here is a tin-eared pastiche of MidE and ModE, and a disservice to the poet, to whom rhythms, syllables, and sounds are things far too important artistically to be so casually tampered with. Now, I find this particularly frustrating because I am NOT an expert. I'd love for Benson to give me a reliable reconstruction of the poet's sounds. But I'm left concluding that the scribal inconsistencies were just a flimsy justification for the "authenticity" of a text that so often prefers words in their modern forms. Line 1 already made me suspicious. The word "through" just didn't seem to fit. A check confirmed that the MS has "thurgh." The MS also has "grett" for Benson's "grete" (glossed "great," so presumably not a recognition-aid). In line 5, "through virtuous" represents MS "thorowe vertous." Moreover, Benson's way of modernizing is capable of removing ambiguities or even muddling passages that are clear. For example, by turning "schamesdede" (3) into "shamesdeede," Benson precludes the possibility that we have here the common expression for "a shameful death" (OED "shame" 3d). In line 49, Benson changes "dyvysed" into "devised" and, for "devised ducheries," offers the gloss "created dukedoms." It is possible to defend the translation "created," but only if it means "created by division, dividing up, allotment" -- "divised" would have been a more pertinent modernization, unless perhaps we are supposed to know and think of the legalese meaning of "devise" ("to transmit or give [real property] by will"). Some of the interpretation-forcing changes are more dubious: line 513 "certes" for "sertes" precludes the more likely meaning. In line 486, the poetic rhythm has been ruined by an (accidental? certainly pointless) insertion of "the": Benson's half-line reads "whiles them THE light failed." This kind of thing does more damage than the misprints (which are also too many). All these things are little, but they add up, and at the end of the day, it's worth asking--why are we reading it in this version instead of the Penguin translation, which at least has its own consistent poetic texture?I kept reading to line 35. In a list of Arthur's conquests, we are told, "Holland and Hainault they held of him bothen." Benson's only note on this line is to tell you that "bothen" means "both" (kind of obvious, but fine). But the line contains a very obviously greater difficulty: what does it mean for geographical regions to "hold of" a person? I'm the sort who actually wants such questions answered (even if I can figure it out from context). After all, it's curiosity about the English language of earlier periods that has, in part, motivated me to read this poem in the original. Where, if anywhere, can we get such an apparently simple question answered? In Valerie Krishna's more complete and critical edition of 1976? No, she has no note, and in her glossary under "holde," she has no indication of anything special here (though in line 1512 she glosses haldez, 3rd sg., as (the court) "is held" -- good, cf. OED s.v. I.8.a). [Krishna has a general note complaining of "tangled syntax" in this passage--perhaps, though I agree with Hamel that any obstacle to the rhetorical and linguistic clarity here is "more apparent than real."] In the OED? No, the only really close definition (II.19.b) isn't cited until 1648. OK, in the Middle English Dictionary? Nope, nothing useful anywhere in the vast entry for "holden."I just did not believe that I, an occasional, casual reader of Middle English classics in my leisure time, had outstripped the OED and MED's lexicographers in my need for information about the verb "hold." Surely I was just being obtuse in my weird notion that some learned philologist somewhere should have noted for me that the 14th c. poet uses "hold of" in the sense "belong to" (even "be held by")? Well, I did finally find such a confirmation (good for my confirming how English was being used in line 35, bad for what it implies about the quality of these other student editions). O English reader, prepare to be disheartened -- I found my answer in a 1915 edition of the poem, by a Swedish professor (Erik Bjorkman), IN GERMAN, published IN HEIDELBERG. His glossary, s.v. "halde," duly notes "-- of, 'zu Lehen gehen,' 35." That is, "to belong to someone, as a fief." (The note ad loc. gives what I understand, from the cryptic abbreviation Mtzn. Wb., which at the time apparently required no explanation, to be a reference to be Maetzner's "Altenglische Sprachproben nebst einem Woerterbuch," vol. 2, p. 405, with the apparent misprint, however, "zu Lehen geben" [to enfeoff].) As they say on Jerry Springer, "Thank YOU!" This is more or less the OED definition first cited in the 17th c.What does this long story mean? In my opinion, it suggests that this edition of Middle English poems isn't designed for readers who want to hear the sounds that danced in the poet's ear, or even to understand the literal sense of the poet's language, but for those who will be happy with muddling through (maybe students who HAVE to muddle through, or other folks who just want to get to the end with the gist). I wouldn't mind the extra convenience of Benson's copious glossing, which no other complete edition features. There is definitely room for a new student edition that does not force the reader to forgo an accurate representation of the poems in order to get such helps!

I see this is the second book by Richard Wilford on the tulip genus. I missed knowing about the first one, however this latest book on tulips is a very worth while purchase. I found his photos and words on combining other plants in the beds of tulips very educational. His designing with tulips is so delightful in this age of digital photography. Naturally his 100 recommended tulips is well produced in this new book on tulips, fantastic photos.Buy it and enjoy it.

This guide, produced by Covent Gardens, has gorgeous photographs and excellent descriptions of tulips. I live in an apartment and thus have no garden, but it is a wonderful guide that enhances the appreciation of tulips you see in the shops and in gardens.

Frederick Gallegos, MBA, has expertise in IT Audit Education, IS Auditing, Security, and Control of Information Systems; Legal Environment of Information Systems; Local Area and Wide Area Network Security and Controls; Computer Ethics, Management Information Systems, Executive Support Systems, Internet as an Audit Resource. He has more than 35 years of teaching and practical experience in the field, published four books, and authored and coauthored more than 200 articles in the aforementioned subjects. He received his BS and MBA from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California. He has a California Community College Instructor Credential. He taught for the Computer Information Systems Department, College of Business at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, from 1976 to 1996 (part-time) and full-time from 1996 to 2006. After 30 years of teaching, he retired in September 2006 and received the lecturer emeritus status from the university in May 2007. In February 2008, he received the Computer Information Systems (CIS) Lifetime Achievement Award from the CIS Department at Cal Poly, Pomona, California. He continues to maintain contact and provides consulting services with his past undergraduate and graduate students and alumni of the CIS Department’s Information Assurance programs from the California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California. Before teaching full-time at Cal Poly (1996–2006), Gallegos worked for GAO―Los Angeles Regional Office (1972–1996) and advanced within GAO to serve as manager, Management and Evaluator Support Group. He managed staff involved in Office Automation, Computer Audit Support, Computer Audit, Training, Human Resource Planning and Staffing, Technical Information Retrieval and Security/Facilities Management. He retired from GAO in 1996 with 26 years of federal and military service. He is a recipient of several service awards from GAO, EDP Audit, Control, and Security Newsletter (EDPACS), and ISACA that recognized his past contributions to the field and his efforts in the establishment of formal universities courses at his alma mater in IS Auditing, Control and Security at the undergraduate level in 1979 with the implementation of Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) accredited graduate-level Master of Science in Business Administration Degree program in IS Auditing since 1980. (The AACSB was founded in 1916 to accredit schools of business worldwide.) Gallegos has spoken widely on topics related to the IS Audit, Control, and Security field. Sandra Senft, MSBA-IS Audit, CISA, CIA, is an executive with more than 30 years of combined experience in auditing, financial management, insurance, and information technology (IT). During her career in IT, her responsibilities included finance, process improvement, project management, quality management, service management, sourcing, and vendor management.Sandra developed an extensive understanding of the IT and financial disciplines in her role as the global chief financial officer for Group IT within Zurich Financial Services in Zurich, Switzerland. Prior to that she was the Assistant Vice President for IT Support Services at Farmers Insurance in Los Angeles, CA. She was responsible for the Project Management Office, IT Finance, Quality Assurance, Sourcing and Vendor Management, Service Management, and Asset Management. During her career as an IS auditor and IS audit manager, she specialized in auditing systems development projects as well as general control audits of mainframe and distributed systems, information security, disaster recovery, and quality assurance. She was also responsible for defining and developing the audit risk methodology, audit methodology, automated audit workflow system, and training audit staff. She was a faculty member of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, from 1997 to 2000, where she taught undergraduate and graduate courses in IT and IS auditing. She has also presented IS auditing topics at seminars, conferences, and CISA review courses specializing in systems development auditing. She has authored and coauthored several articles on IT controls and audit for Auerbach Publications. She is a non-practicing Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). She served as president, treasurer, director of research and academic relations, and spring conference chair for the Los Angeles Chapter of ISACA. Aleksandra Looho Davis, MSBA-IS Audit, CISA, CIA, CPA, has over 15 years of combined experience in auditing, financial management, insurance, and risk management. Currently, she is an IT Audit Principal at a leading insurance company in California. Throughout her career, Aleksandra has spearheaded several Compliance Programs, including SOX 404, and continues to incorporate improvements to ensure sustainability of the programs. She also consults on key company initiatives to help ensure that adequate controls are considered, provides audit and other consulting services, including Enterprise Risk Management (ERM), Business Continuity/Disaster Recovery (BC/DR), and Quality Assessment and Improvement Program (QAIP). Aleksandra also facilitates communication to help increase internal controls awareness and is a liaison to external auditors. Aleksandra graduated from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California, with a Master of Science in Business Administration option in IS Auditing. As a former past president of the Los Angeles Chapter of ISACA, Aleksandra has been an active chapter volunteer and supporter since she was in her graduate program. Terribly written textbook.

Excellent Condition.

If I were to commission someone to write a textbook I would hold this up as the perfect example of what not to do. This is by far one of the worst put together textbooks I have ever experienced. Be prepared for frustration if your goal is to use the end of the chapter questions to review what was in the chapter as you will need to look up to three chapters in any direction to find anything that comes close to covering the concept the question asks about.This is the book for you if enjoy frustration and futility. If you are an instructor that hates your students and hates teaching, this is the book for you. Sadly, if you want an effective tool for covering the concepts this book was meant to cover, you will be disappointed.

My daughter checked this book out at the library, and LOVED it!! She's read other sleepover books, but none were as good as this one. She really recommends it!! We plan on purchasing our own copy.

We got the book when we were supposed to. The book has some good ideas in it. My daughter has enjoyed it, She is 10 years old.

I have had a copy of this book in my elementary school library for several years and it's always been very popular with the girls. The library copy was lost this year and, luckily, I was able to replace it through Amazon.

I love remember buying this book when I was in middle school at the scholastic school fairs and I was OBSESSED with this book ! If My mom didn't give it away I would still keep it until today

I bought this book for my daughter, about to celebrate her 10th birthday. I think we will need to have several birthday sleepover bashes, as there are way too many great ideas in this book for her to choose enough for only one night! Really creative invitations, inexpensive crafts, age appropriate food preparation, laugh giggle and squeal games, with clear instructions for the 8-12 age group. Great for this age, where she really wants to be involved in the planning. I don't know if the girls will get any sleep, but it looks like we're going to have a terrific party. Or two. Or more?

This book is full of great ideas for a sleepover. My daughter and friends had a wonderful time with this book. I would recommend this to anyone thinking of having a sleepover!!

I was raised an atheist, but later converted Sunni Islam. My parents strongly opposed to my new faith, and tried every means to pull me out of Islam. Failing several attempts to get me out of Islam, my parents converted Christianity. Then as I went to the church, I realized that if Islam doesn't reform, it would not be able to survive the pressure from Christianity. Later, I searched about how to pray according to Quran alone, then I hit Edip Yuksel. His article "Manifestos to Islamic Reform" convinced me to give up Hadith. As I read this translation, it fundamentally changed my understanding of the Quran. Well, in fact, when non-Muslims asked me about what Islam teaches, I had no idea, until I read this translation. In my first reading, I grasped the message of peace and justice in the Quran. And this translation solved the problem of sexism that had troubled me - a girl, for a long time. Later, I made friends with Edip Yuksel, and he's really kind, and treated me as his daughter.But last December, I found this translation inadequate. I found that the Quran has some special structures and coherence, that Edip Yuksel may not be aware of. Furthermore, in his end notes, he did not explain fully why he interpreted some verses in a certain way, so it appears that he's simply supporting an ideology. For instance, I object to how he interprets 25:30, although I reached a similar conclusion he did, because he didn't show his work, and he wrote too much about the ideology. But I understand why he's doing that - the defective understanding about Islam is just so widespread that to Quranist scholars, the need to correct the understanding is more stringent than the need to help other Quranists. Sure, the majority of Quranist literature is polemical. And many middle eastern studies scholars are not even aware of the existence of Quranists.Another passage that I don't like is the article about prayer in the appendix. It just shows that Edip Yuksel didn't uproot all his Sunni influence built up in his youth. I also don't like the overemphasis on Code 19. I don't reject it, but I think Yuksel put too much weight on it. After all, Yuksel used to work with Rashad Khalifa, who discovered Code 19. I really really don't recommend Rashad Khalifa's translation, especially the appendices. I really disgust manipulation of numbers - some 19ers even claim to know when is the Day of Judgment; they say 2280. I'd prefer more emphasis on the content of Quran itself, as a guidance.I've been a Quranist for almost two and a half years. For Quranists, I advice you not to stick with this one translation. I'm now reading Dr. Shabbir Ahmed's translation, experimenting the structural approach I just discovered. To be honest, the structural approach works better than Code 19 to understand the Quran. But traditionalists must be sick of it, for it requires forgetting about any traditional understandings. I think the best way is to learn Arabic and read the Arabic original yourself, for the translators are not 100% objective. And you're welcome to be skeptical to dictionary definitions, for the Arabic language has been shaped by Sunni understandings after the revelation of Quran.Finally, sellers will get mad: you can get free pdf edition of this and other translations of the Quran. But a hard copy just feels different, and is more convenient for cross reference.

Best Quran Translation I have read.I grew up in a non-arabic Muslim country and Arabic is not my native language. I always relied on translation of the Quran to understand my religion. There were some verses I could not understand even from the translation. I purchased the Reformist Translation and my world became upside down. I thought I was a Muslim but I realized that I was not following the Quran. With this translation I learned that to be in contact with the God I do not need to speak Arabic but I need to understand what Allah was telling me. Thanks to all who contributed to this translation I now consider myself a peacemaker, the one who follows the path of Peace or a real MUSLIM. I am still learning and each time I read it I learn more. The notes at the end of each section (Surah) clear all the questions in my mind and makes me think one step ahead to be a better person. Cross referencing the verses is very smart and with the help of the end notes I can easily find similar topics. I am glad I came across with this copy. If you are a Muslim you need to have this version with you at all times to learn more about Allah; If you are an atheist or deist or agnostic or skeptic or a member of any other religion read this translation with an empty bucket (objectively) to learn about the real Islam. I now keep this translation right next to Mohammed Asad's translation and compare the translations to understand better.The unique thing about this translation is that author shows his ability of translating from Arabic to English without being influenced by contradicting information. Some translations explain some of the verses relying on "historical stories" but this Reformist Translation does not add stories to explanations. Instead of using unreliable data, Edip Yuksel uses Quranic verses to explain the other verses. You will see a lot of references from Quran to understand one verse. When ever i see a star at the end of the verse I know that it is referred in another verse and i go and find it to understand it better.I have to find a way to turn this paperback to a hardcopy, otherwise after turning the book upside down it will be all worn out.I had a question with couple of the verses and needed some clarification because it was translated differently at other translations including Asad's and I found the author and emailed him. He replied and explained the verses in details. Now I am confident in my religion after knowing that it is systematic not a coincidence and very logical.I grew up listening religious stories that could wipe the Twilight Zone Oscars and all those things did not make sense to me. After reading this Quran translation I learned that God wants me to listen to Him only. I am now free and as I read in all my daily prayers I only serve and ask for help from Allah only. Thanks again for setting me free and making me understand my religion.

I have a number of translations of the Qur'an. One of the reasons I chose this, is because I wanted a translation that is free of Wahhabi bias. Although this one is not my favorite translations (I prefer the translation by Muhammad Asad), I do like it quite a bit. My only real criticism is that I would have liked to have seen more annotations. That aside, it's very readable. I'm no Qur'anic scholar nor am I a scholar of classical Arabic; and so cannot say how good the translation is. However, when comparing various passages with other translations that I have, it's very comparable.

This Quran is the TRUTH! I love this Quran because:- It isn't tainted by Hadith influence- Is easy to read- Uses the QURAN to translate the QURAN- Is very accurateI strongly recommend any Muslim to read this over any of the other translations.

Loving this translation. Despite the attempted controversy by people that just don't like the author or the author's teacher, the book just feels more accurate and intentional. Is it a precise and exact copy of the Quran as it was intended? I don't know, but then I don't know if the King James Version of the Bible is either since I don't speak either original language. All I can go by is what it sounds and feels like when reading/studying it, and to me it feels right.

The content is intriguing, yet the Kindle edition unfortunately freezes at most page turns, rendering the book unreadable.
