This is a splendid book about the role of two exceptional woman aviators during the aftermath of WWI and the oncoming disaster of Germany’s actions in WWII. Hanna Reitsch was a middle class, vivacious Aryan and her flying was mostly in gliders. She loved to soar, enjoying the quiet and freedom. She once flew a Dornier aircraft with wheel fenders having sharp edges. She flew this plane against some balloons and cut their metal cables with the fenders. Hanna was not afraid to stand up to Nazi bigwigs. She once had a private talk with Himmler in his study and criticized his views of women and marriage. He thought that women should not be involved in military matters but should be at home, dutiful wives and mothers of their children. Hanna came up with Operation Suicide: Two pilots in a guided missile, like a V-1 rocket, would point themselves at the target and attack it, committing suicide. The Germans didn’t know the Japanese were planning to do the same thing with Kamikazes. Training was done all the way up to D-Day 1944 but the pilots were pulled back for more critical missions. The other prominent woman aviator was Melitta von Stauffenberg, nine years older than Hanna. Melitta was more of an engineer who flew fighters and designed various parts of planes to make them more effective. Melitta’s grandparents were Jewish and this weighed heavily on her mind when Hitler began extermination of the Jews. She managed to win a PhD and developed night landing procedures that enabled single-engine night fighters to be used as bomber-interceptors, the best practical innovation accomplished during the war. Meltitta had a small role in Operation Valkyrie, the attempted assassination of Hitler in May 1944. She was to fake an emergency landing at Hitler’s HQ while Claus (her brother-in-law) would be part of the killing group and escape on Melitta’s plane. Hanna survived the war but Melitta did not. She returned to the USA in 1961 to meet Werner von Braun who was working at NASA. She refused to work for America because she thought it would be a betrayal of her country but Von Braun thought otherwise. Hanna lived until her mid-sixties. According to friends, she was no longer able to distinguish reality from fantasy. The book is heavily footnoted and shows the extent of author Clare Mulley’s research. Two sections of black and white photographs are also provided that give the reader a glimpse into the families of both Hanna and Melitta. Anyone who has an interest in the historical aspects of air power during WWII will enjoy this book.

This dual biography is excellent, really well balanced and researched. I had never heard of Melitta von Stauffenberg before. She was truly amazing. Part Jewish, but she tests and flies military planes in Nazi Germany. She had a strong sense of family, and was so resourceful. She helped keep many of her in-laws and such alive--when they were in concentration camps! Her resourcefulness and willingness to take action is striking.I've read about Hanna Rietsch in a number of books. Sometimes she's portrayed as a drama queen and fairly empty-headed. Sometimes she is described as a very gifted pilot and fairly normal person. This book shows both sides. Kind of reminds me off Leni Riefenstahl--ambitious, gifted, brave, blinders on, unwilling to accept the reality of the Nazis in the post-war era.The writing flows. The book kept my interest all the way through. It's definitely worth the read. So seldom to come across an interesting, valuable new slant on the Nazis and World War II.

The Woman Who Flew for Hitler was an interesting read. I learned a lot about these two women and history of the Third Reich. I admired their courage and tenacity. While both women were similar in their desire to fly they had different views on the war in Germany. Hanna wanted to help win the war and protect Hitler while Melitta wanted the war to end and help in the assassination of Hitler.I give The Women Who Flew for Hitler 5 stars for its Historical read.I would recommend this book to everyone.

It appears almost new, very good value.As was the case in her book 'The Spy Who Loved', Clare Mulley did a remarkable job researching and writing this book, a fascinating narrative that she makes come alive rather than reporting ancient history...Money well spent and great service from Chestnut Hill Books. Clare Mulley is meticulous researcher and presents the facts here in a totally absorbing way - I researched Hanna Reitsch and her daring exploits in the air during WWII prior to this without ever once noticing the equally incredible life & flights of German aviatrix Melitta von Stauffenberg. This is a wonderful book, detailing the incredible saga of two extraordinary pilots and women.

Great stuff... social, political, feminist and military history all rolled into one ripping yarn.

Solid, well researched read!. In addition to providing insight into two uniquely different women, joined only by their shared love of flight, there is the parallel story tracking the impact of Hitler's Third Reich.

Excellent book with a prospective on World War II that I hadn't thought about. Author did an excellent job of going back and forth between the two women and their separate lives

Beautiful book! Can't wait to get started in it. There's not one picture that I don't like! ..... now... where to start...?

        I'm extremely pleased with this book. I love to color over grayscale and this is the first coloring book I've found that offers this. It is a beautiful book that I am truly enjoying coloring. I will be buying more copies to give as a gift for the holidays because of how lovely the book is overall.The paper is excellent quality. It's thick and printed on only one side which is something I prefer in a coloring book. Colored pencils layer very nicely on this paper. I've also found that the paper can handle all kinds of mediums, not just colored pencils.The pages can be removed (perforated) and they have a nice little area on the back of each page for putting your name and the date you completed the piece. I think that's quite a special touch.There are 48 images in the book that are all quite stunning and eye-catching. I'm very excited to color most if not all of them!

I was very nervous about colouring in this book as the completed pictures that I've seen in various Facebook coloring books have been so superbl. I decided on the picture of a butterfly for my first picture and enjoyed colouring it. The Greyscale shading helped a lot with the butterfly and I was happy with the result of that.I found the background to the picture more difficult to decipher, it was hazy and I struggled to get colour over the darkest parts of the page, but on the lighter gray sections it was easier. I found the end result of my first picture ok, but not fantastic.All of this probably goes to prove that I now need to do many more pictures and get more experience.The book is beautifully published with lovely thick paper which is perforated, and I feel, although I used Faber Castell Polychromos on it, I would like to try a picture using wet media to see how that works. The pictures are really beautiful. I am adding a photo of my one picture and will add more when I've completed them.This is a very good first grayscale coloring book to buy as there is a lot of support on website and Facebook group.

This has just become my #1 coloring book. I have never done Grayscale before. I sat down tonight, read the very simple instructions and dove right in. This was the result. I am very pleased and definitely recommend this book to others. Unlike a normal coloring book that leaves white spaces, this type of coloring book is intentionally done in shades of gray. The gray helps you define the lightness or darkness of each color and helps with shading to give a more realistic look. I used Copic Markers and Colored Pencils but would say that colored pencils for the most part work the best as the markers don't blend as well and could obscure the details. I would not recommend gel pens as they too would cover up the effects.NOTE: There are some highly negative reviews out here but these are left by people who don't understand what "grayscale" is. Bear in mind that this is a totally different type of coloring and the images are meant to be in varying shades of gray. They come alive when you color them and you do not need to be a pro to get amazing results.It may seem daunting, or that the image is too dark and your color won't go on - or that it will be too difficult... but that's not true! Just read up online or watch some online tutorials it's very easy. The below picture took me about 2.5 hours from start to finish never having done it before. It seems like it would take a huge amount of skill but the gray actually helps bring detail through to your work and adds realism. And this is a very old technique too. A lot of the master painters of old painted in grayscale first so they would understand how light/dark each area of color in their painting needed to be. Then they would paint over it in color. This gave them a much better understanding of how each color should look in light and shadow. Using the photographs is a wonderful way to learn while getting professional results!!!

Just started adult coloring a few months ago, and have been enjoying this new hobby. I bought the Beautiful Creatures coloring book after seeing a demonstration on Youtube and loved the effect you got with grayscale. Some of the things I love best about this book are the quality of the paper; having only one picture per page; and the different sizes and orientations of each picture. I hope the author does another book with nature scenes. I would definitely buy another grayscale coloring book by Nicole Stocker.

Ok, I must confess, grayscale floored me! It took two weeks to wrap my head around the whole concept of it all. I kept questioning my husband about it, he had no idea either. So, I did the clown fish first and was convinced that I will not stop until I finish the whole book. You can go light, heavy; use pencils, pastels, or watercolor or crayons. The paper is heavy and holds your style of coloring very well. You can create your own colors for the picture you have chosen or find a picture with the true color of the animal. It is a thinking persons coloring book, it is not just random coloring. When you have finish with the picture even you will sit back and admire your work. Enjoy.

Poor characer development and editing. Not like Hannah Howells pervious works, very little humor and it didn't flow well, there were plot jumps and several places where things seemed to be missing.

I love Hannah Howell's books, and I have read every one of them. I gave this one four stars because of editing, not because of story. The story was interesting and kept me on the edge, wondering if the villain would prevail at several moments. However, there was a portion of the story that was exactly the same after two different battles and that rather distracted me from the tale. In chapter 9 and again in chapter eleven when Emily frets over bringing trouble to Iain and his brothers, Mrs. O'Neal says the exact same thing. Word for word the same thing. That is an editing problem. I still enjoyed the story, but would have enjoyed it more without that glitch.

Decent story but the editing is bad!!! There are holes in the story, confusing plot jumps, conversations among several characters but you have no idea who is saying what, and the worst part for me was a section that can only be explained as " copy and paste" I bought the second book thinking it was the first in the series as the cover said thrilling new series, but the purchased the first one and started there. If I had not made that mistake I would not have continued with the series. The second one was not written much better plus there are name changes of characters from first to second book. Owen and David Powell in book one but they for some reason changed their last name to Jones in second book. Seriously!?!?! Also spoiler alert, Emily's sister and brother-in-law was murdered but author writes several time her sister and her husband making it sound like Emily is now a widow

I have read every book Hannah Howell has written and with each book it has it's own spark within her characters. The beginning of this book was lacking Hannah's style to grab a reader, make them turn the page. This book I found pretty tame, and I found myself lost focus to where I would put the book down to do something else. I didn't find myself waking up in the morning grabbing for this book. Normally I can read a book in a day because I can't put it down or I can't wait to find out what happens next, but "No" this book took me 6 days to finish. It wasn't until the Duke walks in during the wedding that the Characters came to life and had me laughing. Although the store keeper Mabel is a "shoot first ask questions later " now she's my kind of Lady and the few parts she had within the book made me laugh.

I thought the plot had potential, but the storyline was really mixed up with events happening out of order and some scenes repeated word for word. It made it really hard to follow the story which was disappointing. I've loved all of Hannah Howell's previous works, this one was definitely not up to her usual standard which was disappointing.

I love Hannah Howell's writing style. I believe I have read all of her books. I just purchased the second book in this series, but decided to read the first one again. I'm not looking for erotica, but I do enjoy a healthy sex life in the story. Hannah starts it early and keeps it going throughout. There hasn't been a story I didn't love and I admire how she can write so many books and keep the plots varied. I also love family series, and have read the 20+ book Murray clan twice. What I feel the need to finally write, is how gross I find the men always washing up the heroine and themselves after sex. Seriously? Does she know men who do this? If a man ever tried to do that to me, he wouldn't be back! Yuck! Thank goodness the act is over, because it makes me cringe every time I read it. All in all that small tidbit of nausea inducing writing would not make me stop reading, I just wish she would stop.

As a fan of Ms Howell it was sad to see a book let down by what seemed to be a lack of proof reading. There were sections of dialogue repeated and various scenes out of order which made for a very frustrating read. That being said I did enjoy the first 40% and the last 20 % but the middle was all over the show and made it hard to develop a connection with the main characters. Here's hoping book 2 is better.

LOVE Hannah Howell however this book was a big disappointment. Started off great but once Iain got them back to his home it went downhill from there. A lot of errors and even though I liked both main characters their love story just seemed off. Hopefully just bad editing. I’ll give the next book in the series a try but might stop there if it’s the same thing. Wasn’t the Hannah Howell I’ve read before.
