Its always good to be prepared, to have as much insight into the situation your are in s possible. Yet, too many Americans visiting or working in France find themselves annoyed by, or disappointed in, their time in France due to lack of preparation. So, if you are among the unprepared and plan to spend time in France, it is imperative that you read Carol Keiffer’s book, Living and Working in France. Keiffer is quite aware that, for a majority of Americans, France is an arcane cultural enigma. As such, her goal is to disperse the cloud of mystery and prepare you for an enjoyable, successful stay. With Keiffer’s guidance, you will be able to maneuver through the minefield of cultural (and psychological) differences. She covers situations that range from etiquette, to entertaining, to business practices, and much more. You’ll even find out why customer service in France is an oxymoron. The book avoids getting trapped in a tsunami of minutia. Keiffer incorporates colorful personal anecdotes, which make the information come to life. In fact, at times you will think you’re reading a memoir of someone who saw a visit to France as too much of a hassle, and now has an open mind. Even if you never get to visit France, you owe it to yourself to have a better understanding of our oldest ally.
Having spent some time in Paris and having personally known a number of Parisians, I was very interested in Carol Kieffer’s guide for an American who finds herself living in France and suggestions about adjusting to the very different customs there. Some of her ideas were familiar to me while others were new.I found her work to be informative and funny. The author’s affection for, as well as her occasional exasperation with, denizens of her adopted country, is obvious. She writes with charm and humor. When writing of the French propensity for greeting friends and sometimes even new acquaintances with kisses on both cheeks, she admits that some French do not like to kiss at all and prefer a handshake, which causes her, in her uncertainty, to lean in toward the person, “hand slightly out…my neck forward†so the other person can shake or kiss as they choose. Then there is the formality of greeting people, friends and strangers, with “Bonjour.†She recalls a time when she was late and had to ask for directions. Approaching a policeman on the street, she started with “Excuses-moi,†to which he replied, “Bonjour†and nothing further until she responded in kind. The very different attitudes towards time and schedules often lead Americans to become impatient when they find that a French friend is not always on time for appointments is explained as a different attitude toward time and the importance of schedules. I have experienced this difference personally.I really enjoyed reading this book and think you can learn a many useful things from it and have a lot of fun at the same time.
Early on in the book there was an overview, so depending on what I was interested in, I could flip to that chapter. It summarizes each chapter to break down what information I was looking to learn about. In one part of the book, the author covers everything you need to know to have successful French interactions without offending anyone. Love it!Not being Catholic, I did not realize how big a part it is to their lives. The quality (French) vs quantity (American) remarks really make you think. I noticed again the reference to the French respect of the QUALITY of something, this time food, vs the American's QUANTITY (all-you-can-eat buffets, anyone?) of food. More is not always best, but I admit I will rarely eat at a French restaurant because I feel I don't get enough food. And the memories of going to the little shop to get fresh bread every day,,,the best. It is sad to hear that the French culture would be changing to our American way even in small ways.Maybe as a country we should pay more attention to their regulations of violence as I sit here thinking of all the shootings we have in America.
I spent some time living in France after I graduated from college, I was surprised by how different the expectations were about simple things like personal space and how to greet someone. I wish I'd had this book then! Carol offers so much practical advice from how to dress like a local to how not to embarrass yourself in social situations. This book will save anyone moving to France a lot of time and potential faux pas. It is also a great encouragement to anyone who might think they can't move to or live in France. You can, and this book can help!
Having travelled worldwide, there are two countries that are of no interest to me. France is one of them. (aside from visiting Normandy) It was interesting to read about the culture there, but I don't think I'd do well in a workplace where the boss says "you are stupid" in front of 50 co-workers (or even one).
As soon as I started reading I didn’t want to put it down. It felt like the author knew what I was thinking and answered my questions before I could ask them. Better still, she answered questions that I’d never think to ask. In chapter 5, French Attitudes Decoded, the author gives many helpful insights into French culture that I doubt many Americans understand. These insights could really make or break your experience abroad. Very informative, interesting and entertaining.
Carol Kieffer has provided the reader with so many mindful ways to handle "Living and Working in France." She not only states the differences between the people and cultures of France and the United States, but she also adds her personal stories with wonderful humor. An interesting and quick read anyone would enjoy.
Carol Kieffer provides you with the savoir faire for relocating to France fully prepared and with ease.~Angelika GreenhalghFounder and PresidentGlobal Xpert Country Guides
