Ooooooh Dave. How often I read thee.If you have a heart condition, I do not recommend this book. You will likely laugh so hard that you actually die. That said, if you think that you may die soon anyways, it is probably a good way to go. In which case, I do highly recommend this book to you, and also, rest in peace. In this book, Dave Barry pokes a ridiculous amount of fun at one Suze Orman, who is apparently some sort of money expert who has written about 100 books about how to be rich without getting a better job. Someone had to do it, and I'm glad Dave stepped up to the plate!Whenever he is kidding, he puts a picture of Suze Orman into the book. That's all you need to know. Now buy it.

I have read several of his books over the years. They are laugh out loud funny and this book was no exception. However, I noticed the addition of coarse words as he has gotten older (to bad). I like the way he can mix true and ridiculous and make it sound plausible. The real life experiences are a scream. I have a couple more of his books to read. Keep them coming Dave!

Found this book at a flea market. Laughed so hard that I cried! Bought extras for all of my siblings.

A few laughs, but generally the usual non-sensical meanderings of Dave's other writings. I did enjoy the book but I was looking forward to the end, near the end.

Apparently not even Dave Barry can write a funny, interesting book about money. I struck out with "Money Secrets." It is just too dry. Sorry Dave.

I got this book from the library thinking it was a serious book..I'm so glad it wasn't..it was so funny and entertaining that I stayed up all night on a Friday night, of course, reading it while laughing out loud...but don't buy it thinking its a Dave Ramsey type of book...I bought it for my sister two or three months ago and she still hasn't read it

As always, Dave Is entertaining and amusing. You’ll have some laugh out loud moments while learning how to get extremely rich.

I'm a big Dave Barry fan, but as an economics teacher for forty years I had my doubts as to how he could make money topics funny. Well, he far exceeded my expectations. This book illustrates how intelligent you have to be to sound silly and stupid. Barry provides his usual of the wall humor while addressing all the usual topics discussed by "money experts."

This is an excellent reader's edition of the BHS. I've only had it for a couple days, but I want take a moment to address some comments that others have made here concerning this reader. I also have the Brown and Smith reader with which I'll make some comparisons:*) Someone expressed concern about the cryptic nature of the parsing system. Granted, it does come across as cryptic at first, but I think the concerns expressed over this are overstated. The table explaining the system is in the introduction and after referencing it for a few pages in the reader I felt pretty comfortable with it. The advantage of the system is that it is concise, which not only saves space but, in my opinion, makes it *more* readable. True, if you don't know the system, G20 looks cryptic. With practice, however, it's easier for the mind to understand G20 as a Qal imperfect 3ms than the abbreviated text "Q imperf. 3ms" or even "Gi3ms" or some such.In any case, don't miss the big point here: this reader provides parsing! And it not only parses the verb itself but also any suffixes as well (e.g., Genesis 3:23 starts with a Piel imperfect 3ms, with a conversive waw, and a 3ms suffix of shalach and it parses it as such with Dr20s0). This is extremely helpful in a reader. I also have the Brown and Smith reader which does not provide parsing aside from the stem (Qal, Hiph, etc.) and let me tell you: having the parsing provided is extremely helpful for reading the text.*) Others have pointed out that this doesn't have the textual apparatus, which is true. Keep in mind, however, that the purpose of this reader is to help you read the Hebrew Scripture. It does this well by helping with vocabulary and parsing. If you want to study a passage, on the other hand, then you would be better served by other tools to that end (a Lexicon, a cross reference system, the textual apparatus, etc.).*) This is large. It's about as large in length and width as you'd expect a Bible to be, but it is thicker than you might otherwise expect. I'm attaching a few photos to provide perspective on this. I don't mind it in general, but that may be an issue for some.*) Brown and Smith provides glosses for words that occur fewer than 100 times. This provides glosses for words occurring fewer than 70 times. Both provide a lexicon in the back for the words not provided in the footnotes. However, if you don't want to have to look words up in the back - and you probably don't - then this means a difference between knowing through Mitchel 3 (a little over 400 total words) and through Mitchel 4f (some 600 total words). This extra vocab may be an issue for some, but I bet for most people learning an extra 200 words to use Vance (this reader) would be less work than struggling with the unparsed verbs in Brown and Smith.I summary, this is a great reader, especially considering the price. I appreciate the work that has gone into this and it is helpful to me. I recommend it over the Brown and Smith reader largely because of the parsing helps.

This is a very nicely bound and printed volume that will, to some degree, help students read Hebrew with more fluency. Its serious limitation is that the editors adopted LaSor's system of numbering verbal forms. As someone who teaches Hebrew, I had no idea anyone still used it. For example, in this system, a G impf 3ms form is a G20 and a D pf 1cs is a D14. If that doesn't seem intuitive to you, that's because it's not. The numbers are assigned by the form's position in the paradigm, but does not correspond to anything else. Students may well be able to master this numbering system, but for what? It's not used in any of the commentaries or scholarly literature about the Bible. I know that writing "Dpf1cs" takes up a little more space than "D14," and that would add up over the course of the whole book, but I would be hard-pressed to assign this for a course, given its idiosyncrasy. As it happens, I don't need the parsings anyway, and so this will serve me fine to give help with rare words. The other thing I didn't realize about the volume is its size: at more than 1700 pages, it's enormous and heavy--much bigger and heavier than the standard edition of BHS. It's comparable in size to the large-print BHS, if you know that one. I travel a lot with my Hebrew Bible, and I probably won't be able to bring me with me in most cases. So that's disappointing. A tablet with Bible software installed would be much more practical if one needed both the Hebrew text and help reading it.I knew before buying this volume that it does not include the textual apparatus (as another reviewer noted) and I was fine with that. The purpose here is not to offer scholars all the variants.

I am a beginner in Biblical Hebrew (taught myself the grammar a year ago, started reading chapters out of this edition a few months ago), and I find this book extremely useful. I’m convinced it’s the resource of choice for anyone who wants something like this in a physical volume. Unfortunately, it’s also full of errors I am perfectly competent to catch. (In fairness, I am a retired scholarly expert in an unrelated ancient language, so I might be relatively quick to catch on to some of the subtleties.) As with many books for learners of Biblical languages, the mistakes here reflect a general lack of sufficient expertise and care among the authors and editors who prepare such books for students of basic Hebrew grammar.MISTAKES IN THE PARSING, BOTH SIGNIFICANT AND MINORThe identifications and parsings of forms in this book must not be treated as infallible oracles. If you want really precise control over the morphological details of the text, you will need to know enough to question and correct, at times, what the editors have offered. Here’s a selection of what I mean.(A) Mistakes that mislead the target audience of Hebrew studentsGn 29:20c (for S73s0, read G65s0) - Construct infinitive not identified as such.Ps 100:4d, 103:1a&2a (for G37/33, read D37/33) - The verb brk does not show any finite Qal forms in the HB!Confusion between the two infinitive forms: Ex 21:19f (for D65, read D60); Ex 21:28c (for G65 read G60); 1 S 4:18a (for H60 read H65)Jr 22:6b (for N51, read N11, according to Clines’s Concise Dictionary)Lv 5:26d - A major mis-identification, as this is G65 of the verb ʾšm, not S71 from the noun ʾaÅ¡mah.Jr 22:23c: for "N13 ʾnḥ" read "D13 nḥn" (or "N13 ḥnn")Qo 11:10c (for G32 read H32)Dn 12:11a (for Hp10 read Hp65 - ambiguous form misidentified)Ps 101:5a (for D52s4 read D52 - it is an archaic sg. construct ending)Ps 22:9b (for H20s0 read D20s0), 22:25d (for G65s0 read D65s0)(B) Mistakes, but more minor (a student should be able to sort it out, if necessary by checking a better dictionary)Dt 24:6a (for G22, read G20)1K 17:7c (for Gr20 read G20)Gn 29:2b,3d,8e,10f,etc. (for S70 read S71)Dt 24:1e (for S72 read S73)Pr 3:20b (for N10 read N15)Pr 3:25b (for S70 read S72)Qo 12:6e (for S70 read S71)Sense of verb binyan wrong (passive sense glossed with active or vice versa; causative or reflexive meaning ignored): Ex 21:28d (for “stone,” read “be stoned”); Qo 1:13e and 3:10c (“be preoccupied/troubled”); Qo 2:20b (for “despair” read “cause to despair”); 1 S 4:2c (how can a verb whose subject is “the battle” mean “engage in battle”?); Dn 11:44e (for “be devoted to destruction, i.e., declared…” read “devote to destruction, i.e. declare…”); Ex 20:12b (for “lengthen” read “be/last long”); Ps 105:5c (for “renew” read “renew oneself” or “is renewed”); Ps 6:7a (“weary” does not mean “be weary, weary oneself”); Ps. 22:15a (for “disjoint” read “be disjointed”)Hebrew typos in the Biblical text: The upper and lower cantillations of the Ten Commandments get off to a rocky start in Ex 20:4. Ex 20:4a, remove maqqeph (belongs to upper cantillation only); Ex 20:4b, add missing segol and remove munah. At 1 S 4:13b the editors do not follow their policy to leave K/Q variants unpointed in the text.Hebrew typos in the notes: Ex 21:14a (resh printed for dalet in the text-critical note); dagesh can go missing in the gloss (1 S 5:5d)(C) Issues that could have been handled betterGlosses that are not contextually correct: Gn 29:27b (for “week=7 years” read “bridal-week”); 1K19:10a&b (for “be jealous,” read “be zealous”); Qo 2:18c, 2:22c, 3:9c, 9:9d (for “laborer” etc. read “laboring, toiling,” adj. with transitive verbal characteristics)Glosses of a single word that properly apply to a two-word phrase (a situation this book does recognize and deal with correctly and clearly in other places): 2K14:14a, Lv 5:21g, Jr 22:10hGlosses that are misleading: Dt 6:2d (“lengthen” is incorrect if understood transitively, so read “be long”; elsewhere clarification is helpfully provided e.g. 1 S 6:14e “split trans.”)A likely alternative verb identification overlooked: Pr 3:35c (to “H50 rwm” add “or more likely G55 mwr”)Jr 1:5b: the Ketiv reading should be referred to the root á¹£wr “form” (by-form of the commoner yá¹£r = the Qere reading)SOME MINOR DESIGN FLAWSIf you know the scholarly BHS, you know the verses are numbered in the margin (not only between verses.) Well, these folks adapted the BHS into an edition **the entire point of which** is to constantly switch your eye from verse 17 in the text to the vocabulary and parsing notes numbered 17 at the foot of the page… And they left out the marginal verse numeration, so that after you've consulted the note, your eye has to find its place in the text by the (small and faintly printed) number between verses! Alternatively, as another review noted, the glosses could simply have been given a continuous numeration through the whole page, as in the corresponding New Testament and LXX reader's editions. I feel that more careful consultation with a few smart trial users of the book would have corrected an issue of this kind.In comparison to this, I really don’t mind the somewhat inhuman letter/number codes used for the parsing. If you spend a bit of time reading the notes, you’ll find that learning the parsing codes like S78s0 and Hr14s2 (emphasized in other reviewers’ criticisms) is only a minor and temporary hurdle. Finally, I think it would have been possible and desirable for those readings that BHS goes so far as to label "l" (legendum) to be included in the notes. Hebrew students will spend a lot of time banging their heads against the wall in verses like Isaiah 49:7, where every ancient and modern translator has come up with something different from how the MT is vocalized (and usually have also required a change in the consonants in agreement with 1QIsa-a). Very rarely (e.g. Ps 103:5b) the editors do give an alternative reading in a case of textual/interpretive difficulty, but I’m not sure if this is done consistently or where most needed.WHY STILL PICK THIS ONE OVER ZONDERVAN COMPETITOR?Three reasons:(A) The (infrequent) parsing errors mentioned above generally only occur in notes that provide help beyond what is offered in Zondervan’s A Reader's Hebrew Bible, which only goes as far as the binyan in parsing Hebrew verbs. The target audience for these books will also appreciate the opportunity to check their own parsing of forms of weak verbs that happen also to be common vocab items.(B) The book under review has a more attractive binding and font (though on rare occasions the typesetting has squeezed words together far too close, e.g. Dt 24:22). Its use of whitespace and justification in the layout of poetry is fantastic (reflecting Vance’s standing as a published expert on Hebrew meter), a reason why even a reader who doesn’t want the help of the footnotes might pick up this edition in preference to the scholarly BHS to get a ready handle on a poetic passage.(C) The Zondervan edition was published with serious glitches in its cantillation marks. (The typesetter has laid this out with admirable candor in a blog post entitled “A Reader's Hebrew Bible: A Review by its Typesetter.”) I think the Masoretic accentuation system is worth close attention, so this really put me off.

From School Library Journal

Gr 9 Up—Leigh comes home to the unimaginable—her mother, who has always been depressed, has committed suicide. As her grief swells, Leigh believes in her fog that her mother has not died but her mother's spirit has now turned into a vivid bird who brings Leigh gifts, both physical and in the form of memories. Trying to put all the pieces together, her father and Leigh travel to Taiwan, where her mother immigrated from to the United States after meeting Leigh's father. She has never met her mother's family, and does not understand why her mother never spoke to Leigh about her parents or her childhood. Seeking answers for these questions and more, Leigh's father leaves her in Taiwan to stay with her grandparents. The present-day is woven with flashback memories; Pan's writing takes readers on a journey filled with so much emotion, color, and such well-developed characters with a touch of magic, readers will come to the ending drained and fulfilled at the same time. An exploration of grief and what it means to accept a loved one's suicide, this book's lyrical and heart-rending prose invites readers to take flight into their own lives and examine their relationships. VERDICT Pan's debut novel is not to be missed. Give this to fans of magical realism titles and any reader who is battling grief.—Stephanie Charlefour, formerly of Wixom Public Library, MI

As an Asian-American woman who has the last name Sanders and a mother who grappled with suicide and who also went to Taiwan recently... I randomly learned about this book from a Buzzfeed article and was like uhhh yeah I need to buy this like yesterday! What I liked: This was a great debut by a very promising author and the premise was intriguing to say the least. I stayed up until 1am reading it and finished it the next day, and will be loaning my copy to a couple of friends and family members. I thought the writing was overall strong and clear and engaging. The portrayal of depression and suicide and the stigma that surrounds mental health, especially in Asian-American families, is realistic. I am also a sucker for magical realism. What I am torn on: Eastern mythicism is kind of the backbone of this novel, which is not something I generally love because this is a trope that has been done to death by orientalist authors like Amy Tan, and can often contribute to building an unhealthy exploitative aura of fabricated mystery around people from Asia, painting them as mysterious, superstitious 'others' rather than highlighting our similarities and bridging cultural divides. However, I will say that pretty much all of the religious and cultural elements mentioned in this novel are portrayed accurately, and the perspective of the protagonist does read to be from someone who is genuinely trying to understand the local culture. What I didn't like: The main character's best friend/love interest, Axel, is a boring and uncompelling character; he is basically a male version of her. Yet he is featured prominently in the novel and there is no way to escape him because even when he is not present, her streams of consciousness keep turning to him. The dialogue in general was stilted and unrealistic, and not reflective of how teenagers actually speak. (The characters mostly speak in cliched language reminiscent of the 90s, along the lines of: "Ugh, mo-om!" I sighed, rolling my eyes. "You're being totally annoying!")

“If he looked in my eyes straight on, he would know how he’d pierced me with an arrow, how its shaft was still sticking out of my chest, twitching each time my heart contracted. And maybe he’d see how my mother had sliced up everything else.”This is one of the most beautiful books I’ve ever read in my entire life. It’s powerful, moving, poignant, lyrical, important, and touched me beyond words. From the discussion about mental health and the stigmas we still have in 2018 (especially in Asian cultures), to the true portrayal of grief, to the heartbreaking truth about depression, to the realistic depiction of what it means to be not only biracial but to be white passing, to the discovery of your identity. The Astonishing Color of After is a book I will cherish for the rest of my life.“I would’ve carved out my heart and brain and given them to her just so she could feel right again.”But this is a very heavy book, so big trigger and content warnings for suicide, depression, loss of a loved one, depiction of blood, very intense suicidal thoughts, abandonment, racial slurs/remarks, and mention of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). But if you’re in the right state of mind, I recommend this book with my whole heart and soul. This will easily make my best of 2018 list. The Astonishing Color of After is a story about a girl who has just realized that her mother has committed suicide. This book follows her suffering with the loss of her mother, who she is also seeing in the shape of a bird. This bird has convinced our main character, Leigh, to travel to Taiwan, because there is something there that her mother wants her to remember.“My mother is a bird. This isn’t like some William Faulkner stream-of-consciousness metaphorical crap. My mother. Is literally. A bird.”➽ Mental Health -This is a book about mental health and how depression impacts everyone around the person who is living with it. In the acknowledgements, Emily X.R. Pan states that she was inspired to finish this book after someone close to her took their own life. And I’m not going to say that her experience, or my experience, are the only experiences, but the depiction of depression in this book sends a chill up my spine because it feels so real and accurate. This book discusses how people always think they could have saved the person who ended their life. Or how pills and medications are the fix that depressed people need. Sometimes people believe in other, terrible, treatments that will cure depression, no matter what it costs that person. Depression is an illness, just like anything else. It can come once, it can come and go, and it can come and never leave. But depression is real, and it can be hard, really hard, and it’s not something that’s an “easy fix”, and it’s not something that we should keep stigmatizing and pretending that it’s not a real illness. And this book respectfully and beautiful depicts that. And there is absolutely no suicide shaming in this book.“Long before doctors put a label on her condition and offered slips of paper bearing the multisyllabic names of pharmaceuticals. Long before my father started leaving on his work trips. Long before everything: She was already hurting.”➽ Grief -The start of this book was really heavy and hard to read for me. When Leigh discovers what her mother did my heart felt like it was being shredded. But seeing her mother live with her own grief shredded my soul. Depression, loss, and grief are highlighted themes through this entire book, and they are so real and so important and I have no words to express how much they meant to me that they were huge components of this YA story.“In the beginning, that mother-shaped hole was made of blood. Dark and sticky, soaked to the roots of the carpet.”➽ Discovery -Ultimately, this is a book about Leigh discovering her self in every sense of the word. From discovering her sexuality, to discovering her creativity, to trying to figure out what she wants to do with her life. To also living with a parent that is depressed, to sharing a life with a parent who is never home. To finally discovering her culture that has been somewhat hidden from her for her entire life. Also, this book is the biggest love letter to the healing power of art.“Maybe that’s where all the other colors are hiding—in a dimension of the world we just can’t see, between our sky and the rest of the universe.”➽ Being Biracial -I feel like this is something I never talk about because I feel shame because of all the privileges I’ve received my entire life from being so very white passing, but apparently 2018 is the year I bring up my Filipino heritage in every review I write. I’m a lot more white passing than Leigh, but the things she deals with and feels, especially when she travels to Taiwan, is something so real and something I’ve never had depicted in a book before. From my light hair and eyes, to my barely basic understanding of Tagalog, this book was the book I’ve been searching for my entire life. I have no word combination for how seen I felt in the book. (Also the love interest is half Filipino, and was the cutest little cinnamon role who warmed my heart throughout the book!)“I suck in a deep breath and quicken my steps to press closer to my grandmother. Her proximity feels like a shield. If only I didn’t stand out so obviously with my lighter eyes, with my lighter hair and its streak of green. If only I had been raised more Taiwanese, and could somehow prove to these people that I belong here.”➽ Identity -But seeing Leigh claim back her identity is something so beautiful that I don’t even have words for. This story is crafted and woven so exceptionally between different pasts and her present, and seeing Leigh come into her own is something I can’t possibly put into words.“We try so hard to make these little time capsules. Memories strung up just so, like holiday lights, casting the perfect glow in the perfect tones. But that picking and choosing what to look at, what to put on display—that’s not the true nature of remembering.”Overall, I loved this (if you couldn’t tell)! This, again, is a story that I will carry inside of my heart for the rest of my life. Emily X.R. Pan has crafted something that is so raw, but so magical. Plus, this is one of the most impressive debuts that I’ve ever read in my entire life. I recommend this with my entire heart and soul.

What Emil Cioran shows us is that the central existential problem is birth, not death. It is in having to face existence, with our experiences riveted to it, not death, that calls us forth to philosophy, literature, art and poetry. I believe that the event of birth provides the more engaging task for philosophy than does death because there can be no phenomenology of death. This is the case because death is quite literally nothing as Epicurus tells us, there is no experience to explore, thus there can be no phenomenology of experience in the case of death. Death is nothing but dying is something. It is the last outpost of experience to which birth condemns us. Birth, not death, is the central experience of human existence. Birth leads to life which includes dying. There is no mastering death because there is no mastering birth.Emil Cioran also shows us that disappointment comes from the anxiety, and perhaps even the knowledge that we cannot come to an explanation, understanding or phenomenology of birth without finding the whole thing to be simply ridiculous; we are not be able to come to an explanation of birth other than to find that it was some sort of error, or at least contingent on a host of bizarre causes, not the least of which being the lustful desires of two other people and a random coming together of genetic material. Why am I myself is another part of this existential question. Everything about me is unlikely, yet here I am. So much about what is fundamentally me could have been different and is dependent on the most quotidian casual factors, even mere happenstance and circumstances, such as two particular people meeting, perhaps randomly, when they met, where they met, when they decided to have a sexual union, whether or not they decided to marry, where they decided to reside, what occupations they chose, what religion, if any, they practiced etc. The smallest changes in any of these mundane and even insignificant causes of me would result in the most fundamental and transformative changes in who turned out to be me. In short, other people rolled the dice without my consent and here I am. Yes, I will die, so what of what? At least in my case, I have found that Fate has not been without a sense of humor and perhaps this just is what makes the whole stupid thing tolerable, the utter humor in existing and being aware of it. Cioran shows us that without humor, existence would be even more intolerable than its already is, but this is a humor without laughter. To paraphrase Cioran (from p. 92): Isn't consciousness burden enough? We must also lug around a body? To this I would add that it is an irrational body opposed to unity and lacking coherence - making life an example of living decomposition.

As book of quotes from Cioran. If you are a fan of Cioran then reading one or two quotes as you slip off into your troubled dreams just adds a little spice into the dark corners of your psyche. A great book if you are a misanthrope or currently dealing with a life threatening disease. Cheers!

I take a perverse amount of joy from Cioran’s writing. It is as though wordless, shapeless concepts that tormented me from the darkened periphery of my mind suddenly had a spotlight turned on them. Seeing these ideas laid bare in such detail makes them manifest, makes them real and solid in such a way that I can push back from them, like the wall of a swimming pool. Profoundly cathartic. Not many would recommend Cioran to major depressives but it’s worked for me. If our absurd human existence truly functions as Cioran observed (and it rings true to my experience), any meaning or purpose, any ecstasy in the act of living, is some sort of cosmic thievery born of vanity or some other personal vice. Which is fine. Virtue is always fleeting, vice is indelible. Feeling like I’m getting away with something by feeling good makes me feel even better.

Cioran's work is difficult. His style of nihilism is deeply rooted in a sort of panic surrounding his understanding that he shouldn't be here. The central thesis of the book is that the ultimate tragedy is the tragedy of birth, and the ultimate sin is to usher in the birth of another. It's certainly not for the faint of heart, and it's most definitely not for new parents. But if you're looking for a challenging read in nihilist philosophy, you can't go wrong.Note: the book is written in the same style of great philosophers such as Marcus Aurelius. That is, rather than essays outlining theses and arguments, it is dozens (if not hundreds) of simple thoughts, sometimes no more than a sentence long, that revolve around the central idea of "the trouble with being born."

Miles Berger's magnum opus is one of those resources the serious scholar of Chicago history cannot do without. Alas, its out of print, and at the least should be be reprinted in paperback form. Hopefully, Mr. Berger will add a few new chapters in time for the 2nd edition to coincide with the Richard J. Daley Centennial in 2002.Perhaps Miles Berger will be able to include some of the new younger developers including Harold Lichterman, Peter Holsten, John Luce, Keith Giles and Allison Davis.
