David Berardinelli is an attorney specializing in insurance law. He graduated from Santa Clara University Law School in 1974. After five years as a criminal prosecutor, he went into private practice. Berardinelli participates in legal organizations including the New Mexico Trial Layers Association, the American Academy of Trial Advocacy, and the American Association of Justice. And editor of the New Mexico Trial Lawyer, and a lecturer to legal audiences, he also publishes a regular column on insurance bad faith. He is the attorney who sued Allstate and uncovered the infamous McKinsey Slides. Executive Summary: If you have a claim against Allstate, Farmers, State Farm, etc. you have a choice to make. Do you want your claim paid promptly or fairly? Most people choose promptly because they need the money right away. They accept 60%-70% of their claim value. If you want to be paid fairly, then retain a lawyer immediately.Further note: Lawyers and prospective plaintiffs should read this book. It flows well and quickly. It also helps you realize what you're about to get into. Insurance companies don't play nice or fair. That's to be expected though because Berardinelli assembles the facts and presents a clear case of what these companies actually are - and it ain't nice. Basically, they are predatory and use peoples moments of greatest weakness as profitable opportunities.OK OK, a bit about the actual book.Berardinelli points out early why insurance companies are regulated differently from other companies. It's because they, essentially, hold their customer's money in trust with the promise of paying out that money when the customers need it. The problems arise when an insurance company decides that it would rather pay that money to its executive and shareholders. Unlike other companies, like retailers, you pay insurance in return for the promise that someday, if you need ever it, your claim will be paid promptly and fairly.Sadly, they have no interest in keeping their promise. Insurance executives get paid out of the profits, the more the better.So, the insurance companies are structured with processes that maximize profits. Maximizing profits means ripping off the customers as much as possible. The only thing that keeps them in check is litigation. That's why insurance companies are so very interested in tort reform. They make a nice profit if they hose 99 people out of $5,000 and pay 1 person $100,000 in punitive damages for unfair business practices. A very nice profit indeed.

I'm not aware of another book of this quality, insight or ease of reading on this subject. The author devoted years of tenacious detective work and fact-finding in order to obtain insights and previously confidential information about claims practices at Allstate Insurance. His findings are credible and fact-based. His intellectual curiosity and inferential thinking are very strong, yet his ability to piece together and tell the story in simple, easy-to-read and highly understandable language are even more impressive. This is a first rate job of analysis of an important topic. It focuses on the claims practices initially instituted by Allstate Insurance in its automobile business and subsequently spread throughout it's property and casualty business. The net effect was to greatly reduce settlements to Allstate's customers and claimants while growing the company's operating profits significantly. It both raises deep concerns about, and also helps to explain how anti-consumer practices of such great magnitude could have escaped the detection of regulatory and oversight agencies for so long.Since the book was published, sufficient additional information has come to light through the availability of respected management consultant McKinsey & Company's work for Allstate that a follow-up version of this book would be even more valuable. Nonetheless this book is essential reading for individuals who believe that their insurance claims may not have been handled fairly by Allstate, or who may be considering the purchase of home, auto or other P&C insurance from Allstate. Additionally this is "must" reading for insurance professionals interested in keeping their industry "clean", attorneys interested in insurance law and claims practices, those interested in the preservation of corporate ethics and the rule and protection of the law in free market economics, as well as students of first class problem solving will all benefit from and appreciate this book. Overall it is an impressive, insightful, important and highly readable piece of work. Great book

All I can say is shame on you Allstate for the horrific acts you have performed that have been written in this book. Its funny how they spend so much money on advertising about how much you are in good hands when the fact of the matter is they have been ranked the worst insurance company in the US. Great job by David Bernadelli on exposing the Mackensie scam that made the profits of this corrupt insurance company explode through the roof.

Being a Public Adjuster, I know some of the tricks played by the insurance companies, but now I have a better, in depth, appreciation of the history of their gamesmanship. I wish I could hand this book over to every insured I meet at a loss and then they would not think me as a firetruck chaser. What you don't know will hurt you.

After reading this and anyone going through a major claim needs to hire or at least consult a Public Adjuster. I pay the insurance company in good faith EVERY month, I deserve and expect the same monetary compensation to bring my claim whole again. I personally will never embark on a claim without a Public Adjuster in my corner.

I especially like how the book is not Euro- or America- centric. It gives a really balanced overview of schizophrenia across cultures, and it's surprising how much is in common, and how much the West could learn from how people in India and other places handle this disorder -- in many ways, though they have less medical resources, this book reveals how an Indian schizophrenic is better off than an American one.

I will forever be on the hunt for another book that I enjoyed reading as much as this one. Having worked with people with schizophrenia in both the United States as well as Sri Lanka, I was so excited to read this book. I am currently traveling through Asia interning at various National Institute of Mental Health facilities and this book has not only helped me better understand my patients, but the cultures that I am living in as well. I could not recommend it enough because it is highly informative, eye opening, and wonderfully written. I will carry it with me throughout my future career and reread it frequently.

FINBARR LIVESEY is a senior lecturer in the Department of Politics and International Studies at Cambridge University. While the book is a terrific macro read for corporate planners - as I read it I mostly feared how poorly the various economic anachronisms of POTUS would fair in the regionalized/local world the author envisions (let alone the author’s highlights on the readiness of countries like Japan, South Korea, and China). Compared to the mid-1800s, there are now six times as many people, making 60 times as much stuff, with 140 times as much international trade, says Finbarr Livesey. Trade has become enormous, changing the way we live. Yet the ratio of trade to GDP has flatlined since 2011. He says we will likely see a fall of 20-30% in merchandise trade in the next decade. What does this mean?To Livesey, it means local is back. He has identified a number of factors that favor local production:-Better design is reducing the number of parts per product, speeding up assembly and making local production economical again.-3D printing will allow local production of numerous components, for much faster delivery.-Robots and artificial intelligence software are poised to eliminate jobs by the thousands, taking away the Far East’s biggest advantage - cheap labor.-Slow delivery from the Far East is becoming less and less acceptable, resulting in a trend of fabrication in and for local/regional markets. (Some 2000 Chinese-affiliated companies have opened in the USA, employing 90,000 Americans, presumably because the Chinese have seen the handwriting on the wall.)That’s the essence of From Global to Local. Unfortunately, it is not easy to pull those facts from the book. Livesey goes off on tangents and offers viewpoints that don’t prove his thesis. He spends too many pages explaining the Economic Complexity Index, the pricing of oil, the upswing in Chinese merger and acquisition activity, the upsurge of nationalism in French and American elections ….. And there are no takeaways from any of it.The return to local has implications for trade agreements, and movements like Brexit. Perhaps the UK and the USA can go it alone after all. Unfortunately, the book does not follow this path. It should have made a provocative final chapter.So what does it all mean? While globalization has moved thousands to protest, and Donald Trump to propose new tariffs, if you pay attention to Livesey’s numbers, globalization is already on the wane. It seems to be subject to a law much higher than GATT, WTO, or NAFTA. It is subject to the law of supply and demand.David Wineberg

It's not particularly thick at 180 pages, but it is packed with economic and political facts and observations about where we've come from and where we go from here. The author is Finbarr Livesey, senior lecturer at Cambridge. He says his book is not for or against globalization or localization. Instead, it documents history and observes the challenges ahead.Times are changing fast. Politically, in the US and elsewhere, we've seen the pendulum swing back from the rush towards "inevitable hyper-globalization," to economic nationalism. International manufacturing and trade will be subject to new criteria. The causes are partially political, but more than that, they are technological. Much of the old globalization was driven by the need for cheap labor. Now, the cost of salaries is not as critical a factor as are advances in technology. These continue to give us breakthroughs in automation including robotics, collaboration through various media driven by the internet, and the ability to "print" (manufacture) a host of new products right where you are, utilizing 3D printers."Hyper-globalization is dead," Livesey concludes, and adds a quotation from the McKinsey Global Institute: "...an entrepreneur in Nairobi, Nuremberg or Nanjing today has the ability to leverage e-commerce platforms such as Amazon or Alibaba and create a 'micro-multinational' offering products around the world, printed digitally, and delivered by drone."

The author makes some very good points about globalization being on the wane. In my 25 years experience being a software developer I've seen globalization in tech very much ebb and flow. At first it was all local, then there was a big push to outsource to overseas contractors in India and Eastern Europe, then it retracted and came back on-shore when people realized the perceived gains just weren't there and the cost of outsourcing, especially as countries joined the EU increased and then lately the big players seem to just open offices over there and make people employees instead of contracting.More in line with the subject of the book, I've definitely seen a big push especially in the touristy area I live in for lots of local items - farm to table, produce, things made by hand locally. Of course, there's the whole "freedom fries" effect - rah rah made in the USA - so much of it all is about marketing. I would definitely LOVE to see things like 3D printing make it so complex items can be made locally. Certainly the cost of transportation, carbon footprint, etc. would benefit from tech that makes it easier to make things locally.So, is it really on the wane? Or is it more of an ebb. I feel it's more the latter and it will like continue to ebb and flow, contract and expand, as technologies and attitudes change but I will definitely defer to the author's research vs. my population of 1 experience. The author's points are well thought out, researched and intelligent not reactionary or rhetoric (very refreshing!) so it's definitely worth a read and consideration of the author's perspective.
