My 19-month son loves it. He reads it many times a day. He just can’t get it off from his hands. It does help him understand more about the things around him and even helps him say words from it.
I find that lots of times I see resources that are purportedly designed for little children to acquire language skills, when, quite honestly, under healthy, normal circumstances no special intervention is required. An active and engaged home life with conversation and real-world experiences will lead to a healthy, normally-developing child acquiring language without special assistance such as this book. In that spirit, this book is boring and redundant *in normal circumstances*.HOWEVER: There are many, many, many kids who are either at-risk due to a home life that doesn't admit a lot of rich language experience, or due to developmental, cognitive or learning-style considerations that make learning acquisition less of an assumption, and something that demands special effort, consideration and attention. In such circumstances, this book is a GODSEND. A child with autism; a child with brain injury; a child with processing disorders; a child with developmental delays; a child with emotional scarring; a child with serious health challenges: In any of these circumstances, the very, very basic things communicated in this book are so valuable! It takes the ordinary, every-day aspects of observing, labeling, predicting and describing and externalizes them in a deconstructed fashion that helps at-risk or special needs kids fill in the gaps and make up lost ground. The illustrations are inviting and colorful. The subject matter is well laid-out and interesting. Under the right circumstance, this is a great, great resource.
My six-year-old son absolute adores this book. He's a first grader and doing early reading and this book is perfect for building his vocabulary. It's essentially a picture dictionary covering a multitude of topics from the body, environment, activities, foods, clothes, etc. The combination of pictures with the words, allowing him to identify the words for many common things without having to sound it out is perfect. He was so excited by the new book, he insisted on bringing it to school to share with his friends and teachers. This is definitely a great vocabulary building tool and will be extremely useful as he develops his reading skills.
1000 Useful Words is a great book for introducing little ones to the English language.The book is a large hardcover book with sturdy and robust paper pages. They can definitely be ripped, this isn't a board book, but the pages are heavier than a traditional novel.The book contains lots and lots of subjects... from people, to places, to animals, to cars, to items in a house... the list goes on and on. Each page is colorful and uses illustrations and / to photos. Each item is labeled with clear text making it easy to read for small children.All in all... a great book to build a little one's vocabulary.
My nephew is enthralled with this book. The combination of approachable words, bright colors, and vivid pictures make an excellent combination. He takes it in slowly at times, and other times he will rip through the pages as fast as his hands and brain will allow.The cover gives you a good idea of what you will find inside, a rare case of judging a book by the cover. I like the layout that it has, arranging similar items or a scene on a page and identifying them. There isn't much 'story' per se and is more geared towards learning.I can tell he is getting something out of this. His new words closely mimic those that are found in the book and he is identifying things he hasn't noticed in the past. This will engage, entertain, and teach children in this age range.
You gotta love DK publishers for being the best go to for visual aids. This 1000 word book is like a portable episode of Sesame Street. Each and ever word is fully illustrated which makes for a perfect cue card for beginning readers.
I think we have a pretty normal three year old, as far as word development goes. This book suits him very well, as there is a large number of new words, but many are already familiar. I think this keeps him excited, as he knows some things, but can learn more as he reads. It also makes it easy for us to track what new words he is learning. The words are set up by theme as well, so he can associate the new words with the old. We like this very much and, more importantly, so does he.On a more practical note, the pages are thicker than most, so he doesn't tear them in his excitement.
It's a mix of cartoon type pictures and live pictures. It can be a little too busy at times but is engaging. The choices for the Holiday section have some that are non-traditional for such books even for those that are typically multi-cultural. There wasn't any off scent or strong odor upon opening the book that I have perceived in some of these type books previously. Printed in China.
